St. George, Utah - Our loving mother, Alverna Elizabeth Harris Cottrell Anderson passed from this life into the waiting arms of her parents, Micah Davis Harris and Harriette Ette Edwards on Friday, July 15, 2011from causes due to her age of 93 years old.
Mom was born on August 5, 1917 in Salt Lake City, Utah to a wonderful family where she had loving parents and two brothers.
Mom loved to do crafts of all kinds, she taught ceramics and won several special awards for her work with china dolls. She was very talented. Mom loved to sew, cook, paint, do her flower garden, but most of all she loved her family and her church.
Mom met Russell Grant (Shine) Cottrell. They were married August 29, 1955 in Salt Lake City. They were sealed for time and all eternity in 2008 in the St. George LDS Temple. She loved to go camping, fishing, rock hunting with Shine, even deer hunting. Many times they took the grandchildren with them.
They both enjoyed to work in silver smithing and making beautiful rings, necklaces and boas. Shine passed away in 1983 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Mom married Miles Lorenzo Anderson in Las Vegas, Nevada on February 12, 1993. They traveled all over and settled in St. George, Utah where they built a home in Rio Virgin Estates. He passed away May 15, 1999.
Mom was an excellent cook and loved to cook a big meal for her family. You could always find something to eat at Grandmas house.
Alverna was a member of the LDS Church all of her life. She was willing to do whatever she could to help at any time. She was second counsel for the Relief Society, Sunday School Teacher, and home teacher. She spent many, many hours doing Genealogy work for her family as well as for the church.
Alverna is survived by two daughters: Joan D. (Harvey) Winegar and Patricia H. (James) Crider, both of St. George, Utah; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands: Russell Cottrell and Miles Anderson; brothers: Thomas Dewane Harris and Aubrey Edward Harris; infant sister, Eldora Catherine Harris; grandson, Leland Dennis Barnson; great-granddaughter: Melissa Megan Whitehouse; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
God will be with you till we meet again.
A visitation will be held in St. George on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd. Graveside Services will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 12:00 p.m., with a viewing prior to services at 11:00 a.m., at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park located at 3401 South Highland Drive. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221. The family wishes to thank Applegate Hospice (Brian) and The Safe Haven (Debbie) for their kind and compassionate care.
