"Together Again"

St. George, UT - Irene Horlacher passed away May 10, 2010, at the age of 103 years old. She was born in Fillmore, Utah March 13, 1907 to Betty and Rasmus Rasmussen. She had an older sister, Pauline Robinson and two brothers, Carl and Ronald Rasmussen, each of whom preceded her in death. Irene graduated from Millard High School in Fillmore, then attended the University of Utah in Salt Lake City where she earned a teaching certificate. She returned to Fillmore to teach school for two years before returning to college, this time at Brigham Young University. It was there that she met her future husband, Fred C. Horlacher from Ely, Nevada. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on September 7, 1932. They lived most of their married lives in Ely, Reno, and Fallon, Nevada where they raised their eight children. Irene was a gentle, loving mother, and always exemplified her quiet faith and strong testimony. She was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints all of her life, teaching in the Primary most of the time. She supported her husband in his church callings as Bishop and Stake President, and also during his service as a Nevada State Senator from White Pine County. In 1964 they moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where Irene and Fred taught school until their retirement. One of the highlights of their lives was serving an LDS mission together in the Ft. Lauderdale, Florida mission. In 1990 they moved to Las Vegas, Nevada and on September 7, 1992, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Irenes husband passed away in October of that year, and Irene has lived with her daughter Carol and son-in-law Melvin Lowell since that time, moving with them to St. George, Utah in 1998. Irene is survived by her children: Fred R. (Kathryn) Horlacher of Sparks, Nevada; Carol (Melvin) Lowell of St. George, Utah; Jim (Carrie) Horlacher of St. George, Utah; Ralph (Renee) Horlacher of Mesa, Arizona; Joyce Ann (Michael) Newman of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Richard (Cheryl) Horlacher of Mesa, Arizona. Two sons preceded her in death: David (Doris) Horlacher and Paul Horlacher. Irene has a posterity of 34 grandchildren, 90 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren at this time - these families were the greatest gifts and joys of her life. Mom, we will miss you every day but we know we will see you again, and that you have gone ahead to make sure all is ready for us to join you. We thank you for all you have done for us over the years, and for your never failing example of goodness. We love you with all our hearts. The family would like to thank Mark Corry and each of the many dear caregivers at the Beehive Home in Coral Canyon for the kind and loving care they gave our Mother during her 4 years there, and also the sweet friends there who were so attentive to her. We express our deepest appreciation and our love for all of you. Also, many thanks to Applegate Hospice for their gentle care. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 15, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at the Winchester Hills LDS 1st Ward Chapel, 5338 North Winchester Dr. South, St. George, Utah.
