Obituary

Arlen Verl Duncan, our loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2025, at the age of 90. He was born on May 17, 1935, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to James Chapman Duncan and Dora Pollock Duncan. Arlen was the youngest of five children and grew up surrounded by family, faith, and a strong work ethic that guided him throughout his life. From an early age, Arlen learned the value of hard work - he began selling newspapers and candy at just four years old on the corners of downtown Salt Lake City. Arlen attended East High School, where he was an avid athlete and ran track. While working at Safeway supermarket, he met the love of his life, Joan Winn. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on April 20, 1956, beginning a devoted partnership that lasted nearly seven decades. Arlen spent his career in the grocery industry, working tirelessly to provide for his family. Together, Arlen and Joan raised nine children, and his greatest joy in life was time spent with his family.

A true do-it-yourselfer, Arlen could often be found building kitchen cabinets, constructing block walls, repairing cars, or working on the family boat. He loved telling stories and reciting poems and songs from his youth, including favorites such as The Calico Cat and The Raggedy Man. After retiring, Arlen and Joan spent their summers working in lodges at several national parks, including Yellowstone, Isle Royale, and Denali National Parks. During these years, the cherished traveling, experiencing the beauty of nature, and meeting people from around the world.
