St George, Utah
Audrey Louise Gilger was born March 16, 1932, in Ontario, Oregon, to Eugene Franklin Pratt, Jr., and Virginia Katherine White. She was the eldest of three girls.
After her parents’ divorce, her mother married Harvey Ensign Dunton, and Harvey adopted the girls, and Audrey became Audrey Louise Dunton during her years of schooling.
Audrey attended high school in Parowan, Utah, and graduated in 1950 as second in her class.
In the spring of 1950, she met Basil L. Gilger from Parowan, Utah. They married July 14, 1950, in the St. George Temple. They were the parents of five children: Basil John (Debbie), Angelique (Jack Conger), Darlene (deceased), Tina, and Andrew (deceased).
Audrey attended the College of Southern Utah during the 1960s and graduated in 1969. She accepted a teaching position in Tooele, Utah, where she taught English at the Tooele Junior High School for twenty-three years.
Basil and Audrey retired together in June 1992 and moved to Hurricane, Utah.
Audrey was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints where she was active, particularly as a teacher in Relief Society for about 48 years. After retirement, Basil and Audrey served as missionaries in the Raleigh, North Carolina Mission. Upon their return, they served weekly in the St. George Temple for over 20 years.
Audrey’s hobbies included reading, sewing, handiwork, and gardening. After retirement, she and Basil sewed and quilted well over 100 quilts, which were given to children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Even into her 90s she always had a crocheted afghan project going.
Audrey is survived by her two daughters, Angelique, and Tina, nine grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Basil L Gilger, parents, Eugene and Virginia Pratt, step-father, Harvey Dunton, step-sister, Joyce Dunton, two sisters, Anna May Honsvick and Jennie Marie Hart, and brother, David Dunton, and her son, Basil John Gilger.
