Hurricane

Basil L. Gilger was born deep in the Parowan Valley, Utah on April 13, 1928, to Hugh and Mildred Lowe Bauer Gilger. Born in a blended family, he was the sixth child for his mother and the fourth child for his father.

Basil’s grandfathers, George A. Lowe Jr. and Sr., owned huge flocks of sheep, and Basil spent his young life working for them herding the sheep. He also worked very hard at home, helping his parents with their large family of eleven children.

Basil was a hard worker, always giving his employer an honest day’s work for an honest day’s time. He became well-known for his good work and his honesty.

Basil met Audrey Louise Dunton from Paragonah, Utah, in the spring of 1950. They were married July 14, 1950, in the St. George L.D.S Temple. They were the parents of five children: Basil John (Debbie), Angelique (Jack Conger), Darlene (deceased) Tina, and Andrew (deceased)

Basil was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved the Lord. He received many callings, including leadership positions. He served a mission in the Raliegh, North Carolina Mission in 1995 with his wife. They then gave themselves a calling to serve in the St. George Temple once a week for twenty years.

Basil is survived by his wife, three children, nine grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, his sister-in-law Claudette, and multiple nieces and nephews.

Those preceding him in death were his parents, Hugh and Mildred Gilger, and siblings Freida Gilger (Talbot), Keith Bauer, Harry Bauer, Elaine Bauer, Norman Gilger, LoRay Gilger, Darwin Gilger, Clinton Gilger, Garth Gilger, and Barbra Gilger Ashton.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2026 at 10:00 a.m., with a viewing prior from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., at the Hurricane LDS Chapel, 677 South 700 West, Hurricane, Utah. Interment will be in the Parowan Cemetery, Parowan, Utah.
