Obituary

St. George, Utah – Bernard L. Prows, "Bernie", almost 92, stepped through the veil Friday morning, October 19, 2018 into the arms of his beloved wife, Florene, his parents and many other loved ones. Although his passing was not unexpected, it was sudden. A giant of a man in character, spirituality, gratitude, patience and example has left this world.
Bernard was born January 24, 1927 in Kanosh, UT to Sheridon John Prows and Faymetta Steele. He was an only child but had many cousins who filled his days with love and adventure. Growing up in a small rural town there was plenty of opportunity for adventure, which he took full advantage of. He was very active physically and inquisitive as to how things worked. It's not surprising that his chosen career was in the scientific field and also teaching. He spent a lot of time in nature with his parents who shared their love of the outdoors and hunting and fishing with him.
He was drafted into the service right after his high school graduation and spent 17 months in the Army. Most of his unit was sent overseas but the Lord had other plans for him.
The last place he was stationed was in El Paso, Texas where the only redeeming quality was meeting 16 year old Inez Florene Stevens while attending church. They corresponded for three years while both attended school - Florene graduating high school and attending the local college and BYU and Bernard at the BAC in Cedar City, Utah then serving an honorable two year mission to the Central Atlantic States for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
They found all well, (the spark was still there) when he returned and were married March 10, 1950 in the Mesa Arizona Temple.
He received a bachelor's degree from BYU in 1955 and started his teaching career in small town Bunkerville and then Mesquite, NV where he was the sole science/math department teacher. He also was the senior class adviser, tennis coach, driver's ed., early morning seminary teacher & the assistant vice principal his final year at Virgin Valley high school. He made an indelible impression on many students who have kept in touch over the years.
Attending school himself almost every summer during those Bunkerville days utilizing scientific grants and always taking his family with him, he received his Master's degree in 1960 from University of Wyoming with a major in Physics and minor in Chemistry.
He returned as a full time student while raising a family of five children to earn his PhD at the University of Utah with a major in Sanitation Biology and a minor in Molecular and Genetic Biology in1968.
After that momentous achievement he worked as a Senior Research Chemist at Dow Chemical Company in Freeport Texas for seven years where he also served as Bishop for those seven years. Through his leadership and inspiration a new much needed Phase 3 church building was qualified for and built. Again he endeared himself to the people there and them, to him.
He then had the wonderful opportunity of returning to teaching in the chemistry and physics department at Ricks College in Rexburg, ID for the next 17 years, living there 26 years.             His dear sweet wife's health had been deteriorating due to a debilitating disease and he lovingly attended to her for over 15 years until she passed away in 2006.
They had moved to St. George at the time to be closer to family. He then married a friend of theirs, Carolyn Campbell, whom he greatly enjoyed the company of.
Bernie LOVED the out of doors, God's creations, fishing, learning, adventure, taking drives, his family, root beer, popcorn, ice cream  and life.
He was the epitome of gratitude, patience, discipline, strength, fun, spirituality, humility & faith. His "famous" counsel to all he held dear was, "carry right on" & "Stay on the upward road"
He is survived by his five children: Arlene (Vaughn) Stuart of St George, UT; John (Melitta) of Rexburg, ID; Barbara (Tim) or Orem, UT; Mark (Christi) of Las Vegas, NV; Dale (Linda) of Driggs, ID; 20 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and was excited that his first great-grandson was coming in February.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Florene Prows, his parents, and many of his cousins, including Mildred Harding, a cousin who was like the sibling he never had.
We are celebrating his life on Saturday, October 27, 2018 with a viewing from 9:30a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and his funeral at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3381 Mulberry Drive, St George Utah. Interment will be in Kanosh, Utah.
