St. George, Utah - Betty Jean Barber Chantrill, 86, passed away peacefully at her home in St. George, UT on December 3, 2011. She was born on August 15, 1925 in Rexburg, Idaho to Joseph Hilding and Mabel Worlton Barber. She graduated from Rexburg High School and within a few months married her sweetheart, Robert Allen Chantrill on September 4, 1943 in Easton, PA.

After the war, they moved to Pocatello , ID and eventually to Idaho Falls where they raised their six children. Bob worked as a mail carrier on the Union Pacific Railroad, as a typewriter repairman and for many years as a refrigeration technician. Betty helped out by working in restaurants and fast food places as a cook and several years for the city of Idaho Falls as a meter maid. In 1976, they moved to San Diego, CA where they lived for the next 29 years, mostly with their daughter, Susan and her husband John Gordon. The four of them lived in several places including San Diego, El Cajon, Escondido, Penasquitos, Vista and Carlsbad stakes. In July of 2005, they all moved to St. George, UT to be nearer to their other children.

Betty was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various callings, her favorite being Cub Scout leader with her four boys. She was a talented crafter who spent many hours on tatting and plastic canvas projects which she shared with family, friends and neighbors.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers: Robert (Adele) Barber and Donald "Bud" Barber; her sister, Janet Barber; her son, William Joseph (passed in 2006) and his wife Judi passed only four days before Betty. Betty is survived by her sister, DeAnn (Gary) Madsen of Lewisville, ID; and her children: Susan (John) Gordon of St. George, Bonnie (Steve) Fogdall of Boise, ID, Allen Lee (Georgia) of St. George, Robert Dale (Marilyn) of San Diego and Gene Blair (Debbie) of Boise, ID; 20 grandchildren; and 40 great-grandchildren.

A family memorial service will be held Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at the Santa Clara, UT Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221.
