Obituary

St. George, UT - Betty White Pratt passed away on September 5, 2009 in St. George, UT. Betty was born in Beaver, Utah on December 10, 1929 to William E. White and Wanda Pearce White. She graduated from Beaver High School in 1948. She excelled in her studies and in all sports, especially basketball, tennis, softball, and skiing. She graduated from the Branch Agricultural College (now Southern Utah University) in Cedar City, Utah in 1950. Betty continued her education at the University of Utah and obtained her Bachelors Degree in 1954. While a student, Betty worked as a secretary in the athletic department and was a percussionist with the renowned University of Utah marching band where she met Ronald L. Garner. Betty and Ron were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in 1954, completed their studies at the University and moved to St. George, Utah where Ron taught at Dixie College. They raised all their children, Randi Lee, Bruce, Dan, Michele, Glade, and Scott in St. George. The death of seven year old daughter, Michele in 1966 was a pivotal event that deepened Bettys faith and compassion. Betty taught swimming lessons for over four decades, worked as a teacher at Dixie High School, and served as a teachers aide in the Washington County School District. She was an accomplished pianist and musician, sang in church and community choirs and played in the Southwest Symphony. Betty had an adventurous spirit; she rafted down the Colorado River, hiked the trails of Zion and Bryce Canyon and explored the beauties of Hawaii. Betty was consistently active in her church, serving as an ordinance worker in the St. George LDS Temple. She served an LDS Mission in the Tennessee Nashville Mission in 1992-93. After returning home, Betty married Harold Pratt of Fredonia, Arizona. They enjoyed a wonderful marriage before Harolds untimely death. Their union was later solemnized in the St. George LDS Temple. Harolds family was a significant source of joy and companionship for Betty. Her life was centered around her families and friends, and was marked by Bettys deep affection for her twenty-two grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Betty is survived by her sister Virginia (Norm) Bradshaw; children: Randi (Steve) Hunt, Bruce (Kathie) Garner, Dan (Julie) Garner, Glade (Debbie) Garner, and Scott (Becky) Garner. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 12, 2009, at 11:00 a.m., at the St. George LDS 1st Ward Chapel, 591 W. 500 N., St. George, UT. A visitation will be held Friday, from 6-8 p.m., at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 W. St. George Blvd., and Saturday, from 9:30-10:30 a.m., at the chapel, prior to services. Interment will be in the St. George City Cemetery entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary 435-673-4221.
