Obituary

St. George, Utah - Our dearly loved mother, grandma and great-grandma, age 91, passed away on October 20, 2013. She was born on August 11, 1922 in Menan, Idaho. The list of siblings went like this: Edith, Nina, May, Nona, BETTY and brother, Jay. She grew-up in Logan, Utah where she met her husband of over 60 years, Max Rogers. She said she spied Max at the age of 15. She was walking with a girlfriend and they saw two young men, shirts off, practicing their archery skills. She turned to her friend and, pointing to Max, said, "That ones mine."

She fondly spoke of school dances, where her card was always full, parties in the parlor at home, working at her sisters hair salon for .75 cents a week, learning to drive a Model T, creating a club called EDM with several of her girlfriends. (Eat, Drink and Be Merry Club). The girls met at each others homes to enjoy snacks, punch and lots of laughs. She played the violin and sang. Upon graduation from Logan High School, she attended Utah State University on an art scholarship, but she confessed that she really majored in "hallology."

She married her sweetheart, Max, on November 24, 1942, and after a few months, she moved to Hawaii where Max was stationed during WWII. There, she taught swimming lessons and learned to hula. Later, they moved to California and finally back to Utah. For over 40 years they lived in the Sugarhouse area on Yuma Street where they formed wonderful friendships and raised their family: Maxine, Jeanne, David, Ron, Jon and Lorie.

Betty was always the "hub" of the family wheel. She provided each of her children with an abundance of unconditional love and encouragement. She never missed a birthday, parent conference, recital performance, ball game or graduation.

Max and Betty loved their life on Yuma Street! Their backyard became their sanctuary with grapevines, raspberries, strawberries, Swiss Chard, tomatoes, beans and a variety of trees and flowers. They loved to spend hours planting, weeding, watering and relaxing on their redwood deck. They watched birds and squirrels while sipping on their homemade grape juice. They also enjoyed fishing (Betty always caught the first one!), traveling and spending time with family. Betty continued her artwork creating beautiful sketches of her family members and taking oil painting classes with her daughter-in-law, Diana. She stayed active, walking home from the university of Utah four times a week well into her 70's! And in her 80's, continued her walking and attended water aerobics three times a week.

In her later years, when the snow and stairs became too much, Max and Betty moved to St. George where their grandson, Justin Cody lived and cared for them until their final days. Thank You, Cody.

Betty will be missed by her living children: Jeanne, Ron (Chris), Jon (Diana) and Lorie (Jim); grandchildren: Cody, Jenny, Elizabeth, Tesia and Sarah; and great-grandchildren: Jasmine and Jocelyn. But we smile to think how loved ones, who have gone before, will be waiting to receive her with joy! A memorial and celebration of Bettys Life will be held at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221.
