Obituary

St. George, UT - Boyd Nethercott, 91, passed away August 25, 2011 in St. George, Utah. Boyd was born December 6, 1919 in Oakland, California, eldest son of Walter and Eva Pederson Nethercott. He married Dortha Lue (Dorothy) Behunin October 17, 1942.

Boyd attended Lassen Forestry College, Susanville, California in 1940, and later received a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland, and did post-graduate study at Brigham Young University.

Boyd was commissioned a Naval Officer in August 1942, which began a life of distinguished service for his country until his retirement from the Central Intelligence Agency in 1974. Boyd was a Naval Aviator and squadron leader in the South Pacific, and an aircraft carrier flight instructor in Deland, Florida during WWII. He served as the Air to Sea Coordinator and ranking Naval Intelligence Officer aboard the USS St Paul heavy cruiser operating out of Japan during the Korean War 1950-1952. During the Viet Nam War and Cold War era, he was assigned to the Pentagon, and Central Intelligence Agency, in Washington, D.C.

While Boyd was a great patriot, influential in the saving of many lives, he should be remembered for his role as husband, father, brother and church leader. While serving as Chief Naval Attache' Officer in Berlin Germany 1959-1961, he was called to serve as Branch President of the Berlin Dahlem Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was beloved by the German members. Commander Nethercott was an active officer in the St. George Veteran's Association where he played a key role in the establishment of the Military Memorial at Tonaquint Cemetery.

Boyd is survived by his wife, Dorothy Behunin Nethercott, his sister Shirley Barlow, and his five children: Pamela (Morgenegg), Boyd Evan Nethercott, Daniel Nethercott, Jill Nethercott and Anthony Nethercott. He was preceded in death by his brother Roland Nethercott, and his daughter Sydney McDonald. He and Dorothy have 18 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 3, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the St. James LDS Chapel, 1095 East St. James Lane, St. George, Utah. Visitations will be held on Friday, September 2, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd., St. George, UT and on Saturday, from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services at the St. James LDS Chapel. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221. Interment will be at the Tonaquint Cemetery.
