Obituary

St. George, Utah - Our beloved brother Clifford Martin Dean, age 66 years, passed away at his home in St. George, Utah on 3 April 2024. He was born on 11 April 1957 in Provo, Utah as the second child to Clifford Arnold Dean Jr. and Geraldine Dahle of St. George, Utah.

He was creative, gentle, and fun-loving.  Martin loved animals, music and enjoyed beautifying yards and being outdoors.  Martin grew up in St. George, where he had many friends.  He enjoyed roaming the west Black Hill and the Red Hill north of town and hiking the beautiful parks and canyons of southern Utah.  He enjoyed hiking Pine Valley Mountain and spending time in and around the Pine Valley campgrounds with his dad who was the forest ranger during the summers.

He earned the rank of Eagle Scout in his early teens and played the baritone in his high school bands.  Martin had a beautiful bass voice like his father and enjoyed singing in Madrigals and advanced choirs at Dixie High School and Dixie College.  Martin earned his Associate of Science from Dixie College in 1979.  Martin enjoyed biking and ran a marathon during his college days.

Martin served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Korea Pusan South mission. He adored the Korean people, their culture and especially their food. Afterwards, he returned to BYU and taught Korean at the Provo, Utah MTC for 2 ½ years until he graduated from BYU with a Bachelor of Science in Biology.  Martin was an avid fan of BYU basketball and football all his life.

Martin was a skilled phlebotomist and worked at Wadley Blood Bank Donor Center at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas where he screened donors, drew and processed units of blood for distribution to various medical centers.  He was also a traveling phlebotomist and specimen courier for the Texas Clinical Laboratories in Dallas, Texas.  Martin continued his education at Cox Medical Center School of Medical Technology in Springfield, Missouri and earned a Bachelor of Science certificate in Medical Laboratory Technology.

From 2001 to 2022 Martin worked in the medical lab at Mountain View Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada as a Medical laboratory technologist and shift supervisor.  He ran highly complex chemistry analyzers at both Mountain View Hospital and APL Healthcare Group, Inc. He was the lead medical specimen processor, and, also hired, trained and supervised hospital phlebotomists.

Martin was meticulous and dedicated to his exacting, stressful profession. Martin never married but was a devoted leader of his fellow lab techs during many periods of major hospital growth which necessitated many changes in his lab.  He took pride in his work, and earned the respect, trust and loyalty of his laboratory team and hospital administrators alike.

Martin is preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Thayne Houston all of St. George.  He is survived by his sisters and brothers:  Patsy Last (and husband Greg) of Hurricane, Utah; Doug Dean (and wife April) of Springville, Utah; Miriam Houston of St. George, Utah; Joe Dean (and wife J'Milyn) of Gilbert, Arizona; and Katherine Turek (and husband Rick) of Layton, Utah; and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank Metcalf Mortuary for their compassionate assistance, expert care, and professional burial arrangements.
