Obituary

St. George, Utah – Our dear mother, Carol Stevens Cottam, at home and surrounded by loved ones passed from this life to join her eternal companion Alvin, on April 29, 2021. Carol was born in Red Mesa, Colorado August 5, 1929 to Daniel Edward and Virga Roberts Stevens. After graduation from high school in Polson, Montana, she came to St. George, to visit her sister and met Alvin Cottam "Duke" at a New Year's Eve dance. He had recently returned from military service in Europe. Later that summer, she went to Idaho to work picking potatoes. He missed her, so he got a friend to fly him up there and he proposed to her in a potato field. They were married November 26, 1948. They lived most of their married life in St. George, Utah. They raised seven children and served faithfully in various callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints. Together, they served a mission in Jacksonville Mississippi. Mom loved to cook and after returning from their mission she worked at the Dixie Hospital where she was quite famous for her baked goods. She made great bread, cookies, and cinnamon rolls. She liked to quilt and made beautiful tricot quilts for each of her children and grandchildren. She also loved to crochet. She was a great example of serving others. She worked as one of the directors of the soup kitchen in St. George for many years.

She is survived by her brothers: Chad, Grant, and Daniel; and her sisters: Mary Gwen and Sandra. She is also survived by her children: Celia (Jim) Jeffery, Steve (Sherrie) Cottam, Kay (Harv) McArthur, Fern (Kent) Goodwin, Jeannette (Allen) Frei, Don (Teresa) Cottam, and Robert (Joyce) Cottam; 27 grandchildren; 82 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
