IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Carole Jeanne
Roberts
May 30, 1935 – March 13, 2023
Carole Jeanne Hedges Roberts was born on May 30, 1935, in her family's home in Orchards, WA, the youngest of eight children. She grew up primarily in Medford, OR, and El Monte and Baldwin Park, CA. Carole loved to ride off-road motorcycles, water ski, fish, and golf. She was sometimes called a "tom boy" because she was determined to keep pace with all the activities of her older brothers. She was firmly guided by her loving mother and mastered the traditional skills of managing a large household and feeding many hungry children with wholesome, farm-raised, homemade food. From this upbringing, Carole developed a strong work ethic that fueled her drive throughout her life, as a beautiful, giving, and accomplished woman.
After high school, Carole attended various courses in Southern California institutions. From early on she was attracted to the medical profession. After her start in the administration of medical records, she worked her way up to managing an entire ENT medical group practice in Covina, CA. She became active in the professional circles, and was elected and served for one year as President of the Los Angeles County Medical Group Management Association.
While still in mid-career Carole met Liona "Russ" Roberts and they soon married on December 29, 1973, in West Covina, CA. They purchased a home with fruit trees and acreage for gardening in La Habra Heights, CA. In the marriage bargain, Carole also became a devoted stepmother to Russ' four children. The family spent many happy years in La Habra Heights, cultivating vegetables and fruits, and feasting on their bounty in delicious meals that Carole prepared from scratch. Through these and later years Carole readily gave her bright smile, mirthful laugh, offer of nourishment and support for her large family and circle of friends.
Carole and Russ traveled abroad, became amateur radio volunteers, and hosted countless family dinners and parties. As Russ reached retirement from corporate life, together they founded a consultancy, Enigmatics, Inc., of which Carole served as President. They provided services to a number of government agencies and defense contractors, including performing on sub-contracts for the CIA.
In 1994, Carole and Russ moved from CA to build their dream home complex in New Harmony, Utah. There they continued their gardening, consultancy, and volunteer efforts, as well as hosting many family gatherings and reunions. After 24 years there they moved to St. George, Utah for the warmer climate.
On March 13, 2023, at the age of 87, Carole passed away peacefully at St. George Regional Hospital (Utah), in the presence of family members.
Carole was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Fern Hedges; siblings: Dorothy Ward, Norma Potter, Jacqueline Stevens, Hazel Pratt, Charles Colstadt and Donald Hedges.
Carole is survived by her husband Liona "Russ" Roberts; brother, Kenneth Hedges; children by marriage: Laura (Chris), Boyd, John (Megan), and Jenna (Charles); six grandchildren: Sheila, Debbie, Ashley, Clark, Skye, Mackenzie; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for your donation in Carole's honor to the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, at this tribute page: http://connect.chla.org/goto/caroleroberts .
