St. George, Utah – Charles Dunham Martin, 85, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2016. He was born November 16, 1930, the first child of Clayton Martin and Lauretta Bomberger in Petersburg, Nebraska. His family shortly thereafter moved to Oregon. He joined the Army Air Corps when he was 16 and became an aircraft mechanic. He was part of the occupation forces in Japan. When he separated from the service, he moved to California and started working as a mechanic for the airlines. He met and married Shirley Patricia Cayer on November 29, 1952 and were later sealed in the Los Angeles LDS Temple. They had four sons and one daughter.
Chuck progressed in his career which required several moves from California to New York to Florida and eventually to St. George, Utah. He retired after 25 years as a Flight Officer for United Airlines.
He was involved family, church and community activities. He was involved in his children's athletic events by coaching or attending baseball and softball games. He was a scoutmaster for over 10 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and sharing his love for the outdoors with his children and grandchildren. He served as an reserve policeman in Miami. An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served on bishoprics, high counsels and an ordinance worker in the St. George Temple.
He is survived by his wife, Shrley; children: Timothy (Leslie) Martin, Thomas (Lauretta) Martin, Terrill Martin, Tracy (Ozlem) Martin and Tara (Aaron) Gabriel; brothers: James Dunihoo and Russell Dunihoo; sister, Rowene Fairchild; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 20, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bloomington LDS Stake Center, 200 West Brigham Road, St. George, Utah. Visitations will be held Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd. and on Saturday, prior to services, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Stake Center.Metcalf Mortuary
