Obituary

St. George, UT - Charles Ray Schonlaw, 88, passed away on May 14, 2010 in St. George, UT. He was born October 23, 1921 to Charles Gustav Schonlaw and Lu Lu Maxwell Schonlaw in Los Angeles, California. He married Eleanor Grace Curran in Los Angeles on November 12, 1942 who preceded him in death on February 1, 2008. Charles was an accomplished artist with oil paints. He was also an opera singer appearing on television shows early in his career. He lived in Los Angeles until moving to Saint George with his family in 1988. He loved to travel with family to many places in the world. Charles served his country during World War II in the U.S. Coast Guard. He served on the USS Joseph T. Dickman, APA-13 where he participated in the European Theatre which included the invasions of Normandy, Southern France, Salerno and Sicily. During the invasion of Normandy he operated transport vehicles which took the troops and equipment to Omaha and Utah Beaches. He received several commendations for his service and was honorably discharged on August 9, 1946. He is survived by his daughter, Sandra Lee Schonlaw and son & daughter-in-law, Garry & Carrie Schonlaw of St George, UT. He has one grandchild, Shelbi Ann Schonlaw and two step-grandchildren, Jackson D. Dennis III & Braxton C. Dennis. Graveside Services will be held at the Tonaquint Cemetery on Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. A visitation will be held on Monday, May 17th from 6:00-8:00 p.m., and Tuesday, from 10-10:45 a.m., both at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 W. St. George Blvd., St. George, UT. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, 435-673-4221.
