St. George, Utah - Wayne was born December 15, 1931 in Logan, UT to Samuel and Irene Winward Stevenson. He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on March 12, 2011 in St. George, UT. He was raised and educated in Logan, UT, graduating from Logan High School in 1950. His National Guard unit was activated and sent to Korea. Upon his return, he was stationed in Ogden, UT as the Recruiting Sergeant and ended up recruiting a wife instead. He married Shirley Millet on October 9, 1953 in the Logan LDS Temple. They raised their seven children and enjoyed traveling throughout Europe, camping and gardening together. His family meant so much to him and he loved his wife and children dearly. Wayne served his country in the Army for over 20 years. During this time, the family lived in Dachau, Germany; Columbus, GA; Kitzingen, Germany; Cheyenne, WY; Kaysville, UT; Schweinfurt and Wurzburg, Germany. Wayne served two tours of duty in Korea and one in Viet Nam. He was the recipient of two Bronze Stars, one Congressional Medal and too many other commendations and letters to list. Upon his return from Viet Nam, he retired as Sgt Major. The family lived in California, then moved to Wellsville, UT in 1977. In 1992, Wayne and Shirley retired in St George, UT. They had plenty of time to associate with friends as they danced, played games, bowled and toured the beauties of Southern Utah. Wayne took great pleasure in working with wood, making custom projects and thousands of Happy Factory cars. Wayne was an active member of the LDS church and enjoyed serving two service missions in St. George with his wife. He served in many callings in the church and was a faithful Temple patron. He is survived by his wife, Shirley and children: Debra (Ben) Stitt, Forest, VA, Robert (Deanne) Stevenson, Medical Lake, WA, Kelley (Marc) Phillips, Anchorage, AK, Karen Riggs, Boise, ID, Lynne (Justin) Robinson, Heber, UT, Sam (Carrie) Stevenson, Hemet, CA. He was preceded in death by a son, Paul Stevenson. His posterity includes these seven children, 24 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 18, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Snow Canyon LDS 6th Ward Chapel, 1610 North Dixie Downs Road, St. George, Utah. Visitations will be held Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. at the Chapel, prior to services. Interment will be held Saturday, March 19, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at the Wellsville, Utah Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the LDS Church Missionary Fund.
