IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charles Lee
Stewart
February 14, 1947 – June 15, 2023
St. George, Utah – Charles "Charlie" Lee Stewart, age 76, joined his Creator in Heaven on June 15, 2023. Charlie was born in Moscow, Idaho to Donald P. Stewart and H. Maxine Logan. He married Sherrel Gould nearly 56 years ago in the State of Idaho and they shared life together across the states of Idaho, Louisiana, Colorado, Alaska, Washington, and Utah, with a permanent residency visa in Mexico.
Charlie was raised in Idaho, being the oldest of five brothers. He graduated from Idaho State University with a Bachelor of Science in Geology. He attended Louisiana State University working towards his master's degree before being drafted into the U.S. Army. During his years of service, Charlie was trained as part of the artillery and served state-side until the end of the Vietnam War. After his service, Charlie worked in the field of geology for several years.
Charlie was a devout Christian and follower of his Savior, Jesus. Charlie and Sherrel had a heart to serve others, and eventually Charlie left his chosen career and home state to move north to Alaska with his family to care for troubled teens at the Kodiak Baptist Mission. There he obtained an associate's degree in social services. After a couple years, they moved to Anchorage, Alaska where Charlie continued his work in the social service field and eventually served as a correctional officer with the State of Alaska Department of Corrections in Anchorage and Ketchikan, Alaska until his retirement in 1998.
Charlie loved to fish, hunt, and do other outdoor activities. He took his family on long fishing vacations across Idaho and Alaska. Charlie liked to do carpentry and remodeled several homes and especially cherished game-time with family and friends. He enjoyed traveling and after retirement, Charlie and Sherrel split their time between Alaska and Baja, Mexico, eventually landing in St. George, Utah. Charlie continued his passion for serving others by using his carpentry skills and in sharing his love of Jesus by serving in local churches, community organizations, and mission opportunities in Chile, Romania, Thailand and Mexico.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Sherrel; two children: Stephenie and Tawna; four grandchildren: Maia, Ashlynn, Kimberlee and Christopher; and one great-granddaughter, Natasha. Charlie is also survived by three brothers, John, Mike and Doug.
A Celebration of Life service will be held for Charlie at Calvary Chapel St. George, Utah on the afternoon of June 30, 2023. If anyone has pictures or videos to share at this celebration or special memories or messages for the family, please submit them to memories@1yz.com .
In lieu of flowers, the family would cherish your thoughts and prayers.
