IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Clayton Antone
Prince
February 17, 1920 – May 19, 2012
St. George, Utah - Dr. Clayton Antone Prince, 92, passed away peacefully, following a lengthy illness, in his home on Saturday, May 19, 2012, surrounded by extended family. Clayton, born in St. George on February 17, 1920, was the second of four children born to Antone Benjamin and Vilate Cottam Prince. After spending the first eight years of his life on the family farm in New Harmony, he and the family moved to St. George. He graduated from Dixie Junior College in 1939, and then moved to Los Angeles where he attended the University of Southern California School of Dentistry, graduating as Valedictorian in March, 1943.
In 1943, Clayton was married to Virginia Joy Anderson in the Beverly Hills Ward of the LDS Church and then sealed in the St. George LDS Temple, after which Clayton spent three years in the Dental Corps of the United States Army Air Force, rising to the rank of Captain.
Following an honorable discharge in 1946, Clayton established a dental practice in Westwood Village, California. In 1973, Clayton and Joy moved to Midway, where he continued to practice dentistry and serve one term as a member of the Midway City Council. In 1979, Clayton and Joy moved to Gaithersburg, Maryland, where he continued to practice dentistry until his retirement to St. George in 1987. He was a teacher of dentistry at USC and the University of Maryland and taught senior citizens through the 55 Alive program. He was a master gardener and an active supporter of Dixie College.
Clayton spent nearly two decades as a counselor in bishoprics in the Mar Vista and Westwood Wards, and as a high councilor in the Santa Monica and Los Angeles Stakes, before being called to be bishop of the Westwood Ward in 1970.
Claytons legacy consists of nine decades of integrity and service, and an extended family who are a credit to his memory. He is survived by his wife, Joy; four children: John, Stephen, Greg and Mary Lou; his brother, James; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great- grandchildren.
