Obituary

St. George, UT - Clifford Ferman Rice, 89, died Monday, September 28, 2009 in St. George, Utah. He was born on September 17, 1920 in Smethport, Pennsylvania to Duane and Bessie Rice. He married Joyce Green on January 10, 1945 in Clearfield, Utah. Their marriage was solemnized in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple. They shared 54 years together before Joyces death. On June 17, 2000 he married Darlene Sperry. They shared nine years together. Clifford grew up in Smethport, Pennsylvania. He served in the Navy during World War II and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands. Clif attended Utah State University and graduated in Engineering Technology. They moved to Bountiful, Utah where he worked for the Federal Housing Administration. In 1979 they settled in St. George. Clif was active in the LDS church and served in many church callings. He and Darlene served an LDS Mission to San Diego in 2002 to 2003. Clif was a kind man with integrity in all that he did. His devotion to his family was unwavering, and he loved serving others in his church and community. He was widely sought after for his expertise in residential building construction and many homes, and home builders, in the St. George area bear the imprint of his accumulated knowledge and experience. He is survived by his wife, Darlene of St. George; four children: Joy (Alma) Richie of Layton, Utah, Margie (Val) Walton of Ivins, Utah, Janey (Michael) Johnson of Brighton, Utah, and Jim (Julie) Rice of Las Cruces, New Mexico, nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, stepchildren; Robert (Jill) Williams of St. Louis, Missouri, Sharon Williams of Salt Lake City, Utah, Gail Tilley of Cedar Hills, Utah, De Anne (Bryan) Lohrke of St. George, Utah, eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, brother, Walter (Marie) Rice of New York. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce, his parents, two brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bloomington Mulberry LDS Chapel, 3381 Mulberry Drive in Bloomington, Utah. Visitations will be Friday, October 2, 2009 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 W. St. George Blvd. and on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services at the Chapel. Interment will be in the St. George City Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221.
