St. George, Utah - Dale Walter Schermerhorn passed away December 13, 2010 in St. George, Utah. He was born March 11, 1936 in Omaha, Nebraska to Harold George and Rubye Lorene Alford Schermerhorn. He had two brothers, Keith (deceased) and Lynn. Dale attended the University of Southern California and received a B. S. Degree in Engineering and Finance. He was awarded the Hearst trophy for target shooting, where he ranked among the top three in the United States. After college, he served four years in the Artillery Division as an Officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was assigned to Quantico, VA, Camp Pendleton, CA and Okinawa, Japan. Dale worked for Rocketdyne, sending boosters on rockets to the moon and with The Patriot Missile. He also enjoyed working as an engineer for Hughes Aircraft, from which he retired in 1990. Dale married Charlene Leone Rich in Pasadena, CA on June 15, 1958. They were blessed with three children: Steven Walter, Cheri (Stephan) Brown and Lisa (Gerald) Lauderman. Their marriage was later solemnized and the children were sealed in the Los Angeles LDS Temple on June 15, 1977. A convert to the LDS Church, Dale served in many capacities, including High Priest group leadership and Cub Scouts. For eight years he and Charlene served in the Los Angeles LDS Temple and 20 years ago they moved to St. George where they served in the St. George LDS Temple, until their health declined. Dale is survived by his children; seven grandchildren: Alicia, Annette, Craig, Kelsey, Taylar, Tori and Kaycie; and one newborn great-grandchild, Isabella, whom he met in his final days. Like the Pied Piper, Dale had candy in his pocket to share with children everywhere and was beloved by all. Graveside services will be held Saturday, December 18, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Tonaquint Cemetery, St. George, Utah. A visitation will be held Saturday from10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at Metcalf Mortuary located at 288 West St. George Blvd. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, 435-673-4221.
