Obituary

Delmar D. Gott, age 92, passed away Thursday, May 31, 2012 in St. George, Utah. He was born June 25, 1919 in Barnes City, Iowa to John T. and Ethylin Ruth Sanders Gott. In 1941, Delmar married Ann Gott and they were later divorced. Delmar married Effa Virginia Nielson on July 1, 1949 in Reseda, CA. Their marriage was later solemnized in the St. George LDS Temple. She passed away in 1992 in St. George, Utah. Delmar later married Emma Beryl Ostler Bowen in 1993, in St. George, Utah, until her passing January 2012. Delmars early years were spent in Iowa until he joined the Navy right out of high school with his good friend, Darrell Goddard. Delmar served in the Navy, the Army Corps and received the following awards: Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, Good Conduct Medal (5 times) and 5 campaign medals for World War II. He then went on to serve in the United States Air Force until retirement in 1963. While in the services, he took advantage of the opportunity to take college courses. He received his BA degree in English from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth Texas. He later graduated from the University of California in Los Angeles with his Master of Library Science Degree. After working for a few years in the Los Angeles County library System, he was recruited by the Vice President of Dixie College, Dr. Andrew Barnum to accept a position as Associate Librarian. He also became Library Director where he worked for many years until his retirement in1988. He also taught vocabulary at Dixie College while he was the Library Director. Delmar loved words. While waiting to pick someone up, he would pull out a pocket dictionary to read and learn new words. He could be depended on to share strange and interesting new words with others! Delmars passion was softball. He loved all aspects of the game, including pitching, coaching and score keeping. He and Bill Givens ran the majority of the tournaments in St. George for many years. Delmars involvement in the sport touched the lives of many young and old athletes who also loved the game. Delmar was a convert to the LDS Church and was a faithful member for the rest of his life. He is survived by his sons: Gary D. Gott of Fargo, ND and Bruce D. (Holly) Gott of St. George, Utah; and grandchildren: Niels J. (Nicolette) Gott, Stuart M. (Suzy) Gott, Bjorn B. Gott, Forrest S. (Sabrena) Gott, Graeme D. (Jeni) Gott, Dylan M. (Krissy) Gott, Jendaya M. Thompson, Kaden M. Gott, Braxton D. Gott and Kyler B. Gott. He was preceded in death by his parents; spouses; sister, Favetta Reta Orin; daughter, Linda Marie Gott; and daughter-in-law, Karen Nielson Gott. The family would like to thank the staff and resident friends at Cliff View Senior Living, St. George, Utah and Wentworth at Willow Creek in Sandy, Utah for their care and friendship with Delmar. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 8, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bloomington LDS 3rd Ward Chapel, 3519 Manzanita Drive, St. George, Utah. Visitations will be held Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd. and on Friday, prior to services, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Chapel. Interment will follow at St. George City Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221.
