SALT LAKE CITY - Delmer Hinton, aged 88, passed away February 2, 2013 in Salt Lake City, UT. Surrounded by his loving family, he was welcomed into heaven by his loving wife, Juanita and daughter Janice, along with his parents and two brothers and a sister.

Delmer was born April 2, 1924 in Hurricane, UT to his parents Mary "Mamie" Workman and William "N" Hinton. He was especially close to his maternal grandfather, Amos Workman, who taught him to love growing plants. Delmer grew up and attended school in Hurricane and in 1942 graduated from Hurricane High School. Shortly thereafter he was inducted into the US Navy and went to San Diego, CA for basic training. He then spent his 3 draft years in Hawaii, repairing torpedoes. After World War II he returned home and married Juanita Brooksby. Delmer attended Dixie College for two years and then continued his education at Utah State Agricultural College in Logan. He graduated with a degree in horticulture and moved to California in 1951. Delmer worked at several large nurseries where he gained experience in retail and wholesale plant growing. In 1958 he began Royal Oaks Nursery in Duarte, CA and later had an additional growing ground in South El Monte, CA. He loved to nurture and grow plants that he would sell and deliver all over the state of California but especially in the Fresno area. Delmer was a very hard worker, often leaving home before daylight and returning home after dark. His love for plants carried over to his own yard where he grew oranges, lemons, limes, tangerines, pomegranates and other fruit trees. He was an avid bird watcher and had bird feeders by the window so he could watch them play. In 1999 he sold the nursery and began new responsibilities. As a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served for several years as High Priest Group Leader, Temple Preparation Class instructor and served with Juanita as the coordinators for the monthly stake baptisms. He volunteered with missionary efforts and Boy Scout fundraisers. He was a faithful and beloved Home Teacher. In 2011 Delmer and Juanita moved to Salt Lake City, UT. Shortly thereafter, Juanita passed away and he patiently waited for his time to join her.

Delmer is survived by five of his six children. Evelyn (Walter) Ames, Gary (Marlene) Hinton, Charlene (Randall) Brumfield, Eric (Melissa) Hinton and Karen Lyons. He is also survived by his sister Alda (James) Murphy, brother Gail (Nita) Hinton, sisters-in-law Ella Brooksby Hinton Gubler and Verna Shumway Hinton and numerous grand and great-grand children. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Juanita Brooksby and daughter Janice (Mark) Adams. Also preceding him were his parents Will and Mamie Hinton, brothers Marion and Carlon Hinton and sister Lenna Mae Judd.

The family would especially like to thank all caregivers, hospice, and home health care workers both in California and at The Wentworth at East Millcreek for all they have done to make the closing time of Delmer's life peaceful and dignified.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, February 7, 2013 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Serenicare Funeral Home, 12278 Lone Peak Parkway, Draper, Utah.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hurricane City Cemetery in Hurricane, Utah. A visitation will be held prior to the services at the Metcalf Hurricane Valley Mortuary located at 140 North Main Street. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221.
