Obituary

Ivins, UT - Delos E. Richards, 84, was surrounded by his children when he peacefully passed away on Saturday, October 9, 2010 due to complications from cancer. He was born on December 7, 1925 to John Charles Richards and Clara Olive Bacon in West Jordan, Utah. He is survived by his four children, Nanette and Dave Pugsley, St. George, UT, Rachelle and Brad Kofford, Bountiful, UT, Scott and LeAnne Richards, Silverdale, WA, and Holly and Derek Hall, Jacksonville, FL, and sixteen grandchildren. Dee was raised on a farm in West Jordan, the eighth of nine children where he learned the value of both hard work and a dollar. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps right out of Jordan High School in 1944 and served for just over two years. The year after he returned he met his sweetheart Patricia Nan Parker while drinking milkshakes at Vincent Drug in Midvale, UT. They were married on April 10, 1948 and spent 57 wonderful years together. Dee graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor's degree in 1950 and spent the majority of his career testing nuclear weapons at the Nevada Test Site. Early on in his career he was awarded the Carnegie Hero Medal for a rescue attempt after an accident at the atomic test site in Idaho Falls. After living in Las Vegas for 26 years, he retired in 1990 and moved to Ivins, Utah where he made many wonderful friends who were such a blessing to him, especially after he lost his sweet wife in 2005. He served faithfully in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, holding a variety of callings until his illness prevented him from attending. He was a loving, supportive husband and father who enjoyed sharing both witty and poignant stories about the good old days. He will be missed by all who knew him. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Padre Canyon LDS Chapel, 625 East Center Street, Ivins, UT. Friends may visit Saturday morning prior to the services from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m at the chapel. Interment will be at the Ivins City Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221.
