St. George, UT - Donald DeVere left this world on August 28, 2010. He was born in Seattle, WA on December 14, 1928 to Thelma and Don DeVere. He grew up in Milwaukee, WI where he married Mary Ann Balistreri.
He made the Army his career and had many long years of service to his country. Don was a career U.S. Army Special Forces Non-Commissioned Officer, serving in the elite Special Operations Units within the 5 th Special Forces Group, Airborne in the Republic of South Vietnam. Don retired as a Command Sergeant Major. His awards included the Silver Star Medal; Bronze Star Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster; Air Medal; Joint Services Commendation Medal; Army Commendation Medal; Purple Heart Medal; Good Conduct Medal; World War II Victory Medal; World War II Army of Occupation Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Medal with Palm; Republic of Vietnam Staff Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Combat Infantryman Badge; Vietnamese Parachutist Badge and the Master Parachutist Badge. Don was respected by all those with whom he served, and wherever he served he set the standard for Special Forces Non-Commissioned Officers.
Don retired and graduated from Westminster College, and was a museum curator at both Ft. Douglas in Salt Lake City, UT and at the Presidio in Monterey, CA.
He is survived by his wife: Mary Ann; his sons: David, Jay, Mike and Perry DeVere; and his daughter: Denise Hein. He was a devoted grandpa with 11 grandchildren who will miss him greatly.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. at 2640 Canyon View Drive, Santa Clara, UT. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, 435-673-4221.
