Donald Lane
"Don" Miller
December 11, 1935 – March 9, 2016
"How are you, Don?"
"Never better!"
St. George, Utah – Donald Lane "Don" Miller, 80, graduated from this existence on March 9, 2016. He was born the fourth son of Clyde Morrison Miller and Dolores Cannon Miller Graves on December 11, 1935 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Don was raised on 180 J Street in Salt Lake City by his mother and grandmother, Agnes Cannon and attended West High School. In 1957 he married Dian Holt (divorced), the mother of Don's beloved daughter, Marcie. In 1958, Don enlisted in the Army National Guard and graduated from the University of Utah in 1965 with a BS in Accounting. Don worked for the U.S. General Accounting Office in San Francisco as an evaluator, investigator and auditor, retiring after 30 years in that office. In 2000, Don met and fell in love with Fortunata "Naty" Balidiong and they married on October 14, 2001 after moving to St. George, Utah to be closer to Marcie and their grandchildren. The Millers enjoyed many vacations to Newport Beach, CA and loved visiting Marcie's growing family in Clayton, CA. In 2006, Don and Fortunata took a trip of a lifetime to Europe, visiting London, Paris and Switzerland where they stayed with a close friend, Elsa Rutishauser. In keeping with his giving spirit, Don volunteered for the Southern Utah Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign. Don also served on the board of his HOA and most recently served as President of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, Dixie - St. George Chapter 973. Don's love of politics ran deep. In 2006, Don became the Utah Democratic Nominee for the Utah State House of Representatives District 75. That same year Don became a well-known and beloved contributor for the Utah Amicus Political Blog. He also dedicated his voice as an often published contributor in The Spectrum's Vent column.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Dolores; step-father, Tommy Graves; and two brothers, Bob and Michael Miller. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Fortunata Miller; daughter, Marcie (Ryan) Covalt; and three grandchildren, Mason, Kennedy and Kassidy Covalt, who he loved completely. He is also survived by his brothers: C. Bruce (Patty) Miller and Keith (Billie) Miller. Don had an especially loving relationship with his nephews: Rob, Clint and Lance Miller; and his niece, Kathy Miller Nelson, all of whom have expressed that Don was like a second father to them.
It was Don's wish that his wife and daughter not be burdened with an expensive memorial. Friends and family are invited to share condolences and memories on Facebook at Remembering Donald Lane Miller or you can cast your vote for Common Sense Utah Democrats. Over the last few years when asked, 'How are you, Don?" he would enthusiastically answer, 'Never Better!" Because he said it, it was so. How are you doing today?
