ENTERPRISE, UT - Donald Theone Jones, age 83, passed away on 30 July 2011 in St. George, UT after battling Alzheimers for more than 20 years. He was born in Provo, UT on 12 December 1927 to Arthur Theone Jones and Minnie Crawford. He married Mary June Harkness on 20 May 1948 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Donald was born in Provo, UT after which his family moved to Morgan, UT and then Baggs, WY where he started grade school. They advanced himthree grades within the first year. The family then moved to Lindon, UT where he finished grammar school and attended Brigham Young High School until his sophomore year. They moved to Thomas, ID where he finished high school, graduating as valedictorian at the age of 15. He spent 1 year at Ricks College and 1 year at Utah State University. Following his fathers death in the summer of 1945, he returned home to his parents farm in Thomas, ID to help his mother harvest the crops and sell the farm. At the age of 17, due to the shortage of teachers because of WWII, he was asked to teach algebra, geometry, physics, general science and band for one year at Thomas High School. It was while teaching that he met Mary June Harkness, one of his algebra students. In the fall of 1946, he entered the Marine Corps where he served for 2 years. He completed his enlistment in 1948 and returned home. He married Mary June 20 May. In January 1949, Don and June returned to Provo. He enrolled at BYU to finish a bachelors degree in mathematics and physics. He graduated in 1950 and began a graduate degree in physics. While attending, he was employed at BYU teaching mathematics. In May 1951 he accepted a position with Phillips Petroleum Co. in Bartlesville, OK where he worked in research and development. In 1957 he was transferred to the Idaho Nuclear Reactor Testing Station in Arco, ID where he worked as a nuclear reactor engineer until 1974. The family lived in Idaho Falls, Basalt, Terreton, and lastly Hamer, ID during this time, raising children, cows and chickens on a small dairy farm. In 1981, Don returned to BYU to teach mathematics and work on his graduate degree. During this time he was employed by Signetics doing computer research and programming. His battle with Alzheimers began during this time and progressed until his death on 30 July 2011. Don is survived by his wife Mary June of Enterprise, UT; children: Arthur (Jeanette) Jones of Moses Lake, WA; Patrick (Lanore) Jones of Monteview, ID; Susan (Kirk) Romney of Lehi, UT; Isaac (Valerie) Jones of Enterprise, UT; Donna (Brian) McCann of Gresham, OR; Rebecca June of Brewster, NY; Edna (Lonnie) Zeller of McCleary, WA; He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Judith (Paul) Tinker, 1 granddaughter and 1 great-grandson. Donald and June are the proud parents of 8 children, 34 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren with 2 more on the way, as far as we know. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 5, 2011 at 11:00a.m. at the Enterprise LDS Ward Chapel, 620 East Main Street, Enterprise, Utah. Visitations will be held Thursday evening, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah and on Friday, prior to services, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Chapel.
