St. George, UT - Donald Woodford Winmill passed away peacefully of natural causes on February 26, 2011 at the age of 93 with family by his side. He was born on November 10, 1917 in Sugar City, Idaho to Richard William Winmill and Tacy Lois Hardy. He was the last surviving child of fourteen children. Don graduated from Blackfoot High School in Blackfoot, Idaho on May 30, 1941. He attended Ricks College until being drafted into the armed forces. He served in the military for four years as a gunnery sergeant at Hickem Field, Honolulu, Hawaii. He was among the valiant and brave men who fought in the battle of Pearl Harbor. After his term of service, he married Elenore Maxine Stanger on March 28, 1946 in the Logan Temple. Don and Maxine became employed at the Tooele Army Depot, however they soon realized their dream of becoming self employed and purchased their first motel in Grantsville, Utah. That was followed by another motel in Pocatello, Idaho before settling in St. George with the purchase of the El Peso Motel on St. George Blvd (now Boulevard Properties). They worked in the motel business and raised their family until retiring in 1975. Don was an avid golfer sometimes playing 27 holes a day, summer and winter. He served as the motel association president and was instrumental and worked tirelessly to bring the first golf course to St. George; Dixie Red Hills. He walked and carried his bag 18 holes every day until into his 80's. During his golf years he had seven holes in one . Along with his beloved wife, he was an avid dancer, loved to travel and camp in their small truck and bowled on a bowling league with an average of over 160 resulting in three perfect scores. At the Meadows Assisted Living facility he was known as the dance man and always had a long line of women to fill his dance card. Don was still out dancing most men and women years younger than himself until his health started to slow him down at 92. Don is preceded in death by his wife who passed away in 1995 after 49 years of marriage. He is survived by his four children; Don Lee (Yvonne) Winmill, of Tustin, CA, Jo Ann (Gary) Gordon of St. George, UT, Maxine (Darren) Ence of Santa Clara, UT, Rodney Brock Winmill of Salt Lake City, UT as well as eleven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held for family and close friends on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Metcalf Mortuary Chapel, 288 W. St. George Blvd., St. George, UT. A visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., prior to services. Interment will follow in the St. George City Cemetery with military honors.
