IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dorothy Lee
Flora
December 19, 1938 – September 15, 2024
St. George, Utah - Dorothy L Flora, 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at home on September 15, 2024. She was born December 19, 1938, to Harold and Dorothy Cooper in Chaneysville, PA. She was the second of five girls. She was raised on a farm in a small rural community in Bedford County, living her early years with her Grandparents, tending to her mother's garden and mornings milking cows before heading to school. During elementary years, her schoolteacher was her Grandmother. By her high school years, they had moved to the city, and she graduated from Everett High School.
Dorothy married James W Flora on August 31, 1957, in Cumberland, MD. They were blessed with three children: Joseph James, Janine, Lynn, and Jamie Lee. They joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after a chance meeting with the Missionaries at the 1964/65 World's Fair in New York City. After joining the church, they traveled from their home state of Florida to Utah to be sealed as a family for time and all eternity, in the Salt Lake City Temple in 1971. The family later moved to Utah in 1973.
Dorothy cared for her family with her love of cooking and baking, which she learned from her mother. She spent the summer and fall seasons, canning and preserving foods from her garden. She was a great seamstress, often creating matching dresses for her and her daughter. She was a devote member of the Church and served in many positions, including Camp Director for the Young Women and Relief Society President in the South Cottonwood fourth ward. She loved her children and showered even more love on her grandchildren.
At the age of 61, she valiantly fought and won a battle with breast cancer. She retired a year later from Educators Mutual Insurance after 20 years of service. After retiring, she and James moved to St. George. She was involved in humanitarian efforts by sewing dresses and making hygiene and school kits for the Church. She served as a missionary in Member and Statistical Records, in St. George, Utah, alongside her husband.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, James; her son, Joseph James; daughter-in-law, Lola Flora; her parents; and her four sisters. She is survived by her daughter, Janine Lynn Flora, Draper, UT; son, Jamie Lee Flora, St George, UT; 10 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and two grand-fur babies.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 20, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at the Metcalf Mortuary Chapel, 288 West St. George Boulevard, St. George UT. A visitation will be held prior to services, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the mortuary. Interment will be in the St. George City Cemetery located at 650 East Tabernacle Street.
