St. George, Utah - Dorothy "Dotty" Eleanor Beckett Nolan, R.N., PhD passed away October 12, 2012. She was born March 26, 1923 in New York City to Charles Henry and Lucy Belle Mott Beckett. She married Col. Martin E. Nolan April 24, 1965 in Fort Devens, Mass.

Dotty received her accreditation as an R.N. from Saint Catherines Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y. Upon passing the New York State Boards, she joined the Army Nurse Corps. She was assigned to the newly formed 86 th Evacuation Hospital. Prior to being sent to Okinawa April 1945, the 86 th Evacuation Hospital served on Hawaii. Upon discharge, she essentially remained in the nursing field. During her very active career, she was a counselor at the N.Y. Lighthouse for the Blind, plant nurse and personnel director for Sunshine Biscuits in N.C., occupational health consultant for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company in the Southern Division and the Middle Atlantic Division. In the latter division she was responsible for the hiring, training and management of occupational health specialists.

During this same period, she continued her education earning a B.S. from Westchester State Teachers College, a Masters in counseling from the University of Maryland and a Doctorate from St. Laurence University. With these latter qualifications, she undertook specialized educational projects, such as remedial training in the Department of the Air Force, supervision and training in health programs for the Utah State Health Department, and as an educational counselor and satellite program coordinator for the University of Utah College of Nursing. She also stayed conversant with current trends in education and nursing, serving as a substitute teacher in Mesquite, Nevada and periodic nursing employment. She is listed in International Whos Who of Intellectuals, Vol. 4; Whos Who in the West, 17 th Edition; the International Register of Profiles, 7 th Edition; the World Whos Who of Women, 6 th Edition; and 1999 American Association of University Women Membership Directory. After retirement, she was an active volunteer in southwest Utah in public health programs, Five County Association of Government Human Services Council, the County Library, the Utah Visitors Travel Center and for 16 years, the St. George Chamber of Commerce. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans, the Color Country Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America and the Holocaust Museum of Washington, D.C.

At her request, her body will be cremated and interred at the Arlington National Cemetery with her husband, Col. Martin E. Nolan who passed March 20, 2004. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221.
