Dr. David N. Bown, 88, passed away on Saturday, October 24, 2026, leaving behind a devoted family, countless cherished friendships, and an extraordinary legacy of service, compassion, and love.
An accomplished scientist, biologist, and entomologist, David earned his Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Utah and completed his postdoctoral studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
David devoted much of his professional life to international public health through his work with the United Nations and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). His research focused on malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases, contributing to efforts to prevent illness and save lives in communities around the world.
His distinguished career took him to Nigeria; Tapachula, Chiapas, Mexico; Managua, Nicaragua; and Guatemala City, Guatemala. During his career, David also served in a regional leadership role as Director for Central America with the Pan American Health Organization, based in Guatemala City. In this capacity, he helped lead public health initiatives across the region, furthering efforts to combat infectious diseases and improve the health and well-being of vulnerable populations.
His family takes immense pride in knowing that his life’s work helped protect countless people, many of whom would never know his name.
Yet for all his professional accomplishments, David’s greatest legacy may have been the way he treated others.
David was a man of extraordinary generosity, quiet kindness, and unwavering loyalty. He had a remarkable gift for making people feel important, valued, and loved. He stood up for those who needed someone in their corner, believed wholeheartedly in the people he loved, and gave freely of himself, rarely expecting anything in return. To know David was to have a true friend, and he treasured the many friendships he formed throughout his life.
Above all, David was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Marilyn Wells Bown, and a loving father. His encouragement, unconditional love, and steadfast belief in his children helped shape their lives. He believed in their potential, celebrated their individuality, and never hesitated to remind them of their worth.
David found joy in family, laughter, friendship, and the simple pleasure of being surrounded by the people he cared about. He lived a remarkable life filled with travel, discovery, meaningful relationships, and countless stories that will continue to be shared by those who knew him.
In his later years, David spoke often and fondly of Marilyn, the family members he missed, and the many wonderful people who had enriched his life. Though his final years brought challenges, they could never diminish the extraordinary life he lived or the love he inspired.
David was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marilyn Wells Bown. He is survived by his two children, Jennifer Bown and Christopher David Bown, along with extended family and many cherished friends.
From the communities around the world, touched by his scientific contributions to the family and friends who were fortunate enough to know his love, David’s legacy is one of compassion, generosity, and a life truly well lived.
He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever celebrated.
