Eldon Edward Wright, age 85, passed away at his home in St. George, Utah, surrounded by his loved ones, on July 11, 2016 after a long, lingering illness. Eldon was born August 12, 1930 to Joseph Edward and Maxine Belle Wright.
Eldon grew up in the small farming community of Henefer, Utah, where he worked side-by-side with his father and two brothers on daily basis. Eldon cherished his parents his whole life and strived to live up the standards that they taught and instilled in him. Through the loving example of his parents, and through the personal responsibilities Eldon had on the family farm, he learned the values of hard work, ethics, family and life priorities, and of gaining an education, among others. These values served Eldon well and helped to shape him into the husband, father, and businessman he would become in adulthood.
Growing up, Eldon developed a passion for the game of football. As an example of the values he was taught, he could devote his time and attention to expanding his knowledge of the game and to building his football skills only after his responsibilities to the family were complete. Eldon's commitment to his family, then to himself, paid dividends as he was named an All-American football player in high school and in earning the opportunity to continue playing football at the collegiate level at Pasadena College. He never lost his passion for football and after his playing days were over he continued to follow the sport closely and was an avid supporter of the football team at his alma mater, The University of Utah. In his support of the team and his school, he was a long-time season ticket holder to both football and basketball at the University.
In 1949, Eldon married his first wife Helen Rae Robinson, later divorced, and together they had one daughter, Sheryl Wright (Bailey). In 1960, Eldon married Betty Jane Jensen and their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple four years later. They celebrated 56 years together. Eldon and Betty are parents to Kellee Ann and Sally Jane.
As a father and husband, Eldon was the best. With his strong values and ethics, Eldon was an example to all of his children of true love and generosity, compassion, honesty and integrity, and always a man of his word and commitment.
Eldon and Betty raised their family in Salt Lake City, Utah near the mouth of Parley's Canyon. He loved this area of the Salt Lake Valley so much that the family lived in three different homes, all located within one mile of each other, over a span of 40 years. As a young family, the Wright's spent countless hours together working and playing hard, camping in their RV, and traveling to many states and countries.
In 2001, Eldon and Betty moved to St. George, Utah to enjoy their retirement years.
Eldon was a lifelong and faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While raising their family, Eldon and Betty belonged to the Parley's 1st Ward and the ward provided a wonderful atmosphere for their spiritual growth. He had a strong testimony of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As a member of the Church, Eldon held numerous church callings and he particularly loved and enjoyed his work as a clerk for numerous bishops and stake presidents. His favorite and most spiritually rewarding calling was that of a temple worker at the St. George temple. Eldon faithfully served in this calling for 13 years.
Eldon's professional career in business was spent primarily with the Hydro Flame Corporation in Salt Lake City. His growth in the organization took him to the pinnacle of his career when he became president of the company. In his role as president, Eldon provided strong leadership and quality mentoring to employees at all levels of the organization through his style of servant leadership rooted in his values of honesty, integrity, and hard work. He was widely respected and admired by the Company's employees and industry leaders alike. He retired from Hydro Flame, as president, in 1996.
Eldon's hobbies and interests were broad and varied. He satisfied his lifelong love for Barbershop music through his participation in the genre through the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. (SPEBSQSA). Eldon's association with this society took Betty and him to many parts of the country to sing with the chorus and to attend the society's Barbershop conventions.
Another of Eldon's favorite passions was fly fishing on blue ribbon rivers, from Utah to Alaska. Over a span of 25 years, he traveled annually to Alaska to fish with his lifelong friends Cordell Ferry, Jim Wilson, and Thomas Beard. Together they created innumerable memories and enjoyed their shared love of the outdoors.
One of Eldon's family getaways was the family farmhouse and property in Henefer. Over the years the farmhouse has provided a retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life and has been a central family gathering point for reunions, weekend retreats, day trips, and reconnecting with family roots. For the past 45 years the farmhouse has been a labor of love for Eldon and Betty as they have continually worked to improve the property for themselves, the family, and potential future generations.
Eldon is survived by his wife Betty and children: Sheryl Wright (Jack) Bailey, Kellee Ann (Tony) Keller, and Sally Jane Wright, soon to be Howell (Matt); brothers: Claire (Margaret) Wright and Wayne (LaRae) Wright: 6 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way.
The family would like to thank Eldon's hospice nurse, Shelley, for the caring and compassionate service she provided to Eldon in his final days.
