Obituary

Logan, UT - Emery "Dwayne" Gentry passed away peacefully in Logan, Utah, May 11, 2011, one month short of 87 years. Dwayne is reunited with his, "sweet little red head", Cleo Lilly Hall, after an 18 year separation. Dwayne was born to goodly parents, Harry S. Gentry & Viola V. McAllister, who preceded him in death along with all his siblings: LaBerta, Mary Ellen, Max, Austin, Ellis, Eldon, and Raymond. Dwayne was born June 13, 1924 in St George, Utah and lived in St Thomas, Nevada for his first eight years. Then the Gentry family moved to St. George. Dad shared many exciting and wonderful stories of his youthful adventures. He served our country honorably in the Philippines and Japan during World War II in the U.S. Army, 24th Division, 19th Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion, Company G, as a 1st Scout. Dad found his eternal sweetheart once again at a dance, sweeping Cleo Lilly Hall off her feet. They were married in the St. George Temple on May 14th, 1946. They resided in St. George where Dwayne worked with his brothers in the family dairy. After living for five years in Hurricane operating his own dairy, they returned to St. George. Dwayne retired from Dixie College, where he worked as the head custodian at the college gym. Dwayne and Cleo are the parents of five children: Scott, Stephen, Tom, Paul and Dayna Gai (McArthur); grandparents of 29, and great-grandparents of 45. Dwayne has held many positions in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was president of the Hurricane Lions Club. He was the long-time honorary mayor of Hell's Kitchen (Lake Mead), where fish trembled at the mention of his name. Dad was the grand pooh-bah of the pine nut hills, where squirrels and crows feared him. Many were mesmerized and inspired by his telling of his war experiences. Dwayne is renowned for being able to fix any lawn mower, for his Dutch oven cooking, his kindness to all, his never-ending teasing and sense of humor and for his rich Irish tenor voice. He was a terrific and fun-loving dad, grandpa, uncle, and friend. Dad taught us by his example; great patience, service and how to endure to the end! He will be missed, but what a grand reunion elsewhere! Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the Metcalf Mortuary Chapel, 288 West St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah. Visitations will be held on Friday evening, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Mortuary, prior to the service. Interment will be at the St. George City Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221. We give our thanks to the staff of Legacy House Assisted Living of Logan and Alpine Health Care and Hospice for their tender care of our father during his final months
