Obituary

St. George, UT - Farrel C Metcalf, 86, passed away Monday, May 4. Born April 19, 1923 in Iona, Idaho, he graduated from Idaho Falls High School, and at age 74 completed requirements for a Bachelor of Science in Independent Studies from Brigham Young University. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many leadership positions including bishops counselor; bishop of the 10th Ward, North Idaho Falls Stake; Ammon Stake Patriarch; missionary with his wife, Marjorie, in Texas Corpus Christi Mission; Idaho Falls Temple ordinance worker; and as a missionary in the Idaho Falls Temple Visitors Center. He also served on the High Council in both the North Idaho Falls and Ivins Stakes. Farrel was an avid gardener, and the fruits and vegetables of his labor provided many hearty and nutritious meals for his neighbors and his own family. He had a fine bass voice and enjoyed participating with the Fallsmen Barbershop Chorus, serving at one time as its president. He sang in several barbershop quartets as well. He was a gentlemans gentleman and took delight in meeting and greeting people, making them feel comfortable and bringing smiles to their faces. A licensed property and casualty insurance agent for 40 years in Idaho Falls, he partnered with Chad Anderson in 1950 to form Metcalf-Anderson, Inc. Flying was a special interest and World War II saw him train as an AT-6 fighter pilot. He continued in the reserve after the war and was issued an honorable discharge as a U.S.A.F captain in March of 1962. Active in civic affairs during his insurance career, he participated in Kiwanis, Jay Cees, on District 91's School Board and was active in the campaign to build the Idaho Falls Civic Auditorium. While gardening, piloting, insurance sales and barber shopping were his interests; his true love was his wife of 63 years, Marjorie. From their union came six devoted children: Michael, Steven, David, Mary Ann, Chad and Paul. Their father was the positive role model that has influenced all their lives. He was preceded in death by his sister, Valeen and his brother, Darwin. Besides his immediate family he is survived by two sisters, Sharon and Valerie and two brothers, Verle and Keith, all of Idaho Falls. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, May 7, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Red Cliffs LDS 8th Ward Chapel, 625 E. Center Street, Ivins, Utah. Visitation will be Thursday at the chapel one hour prior to services. Interment will be Saturday, May 9, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Ammon City Cemetery, adjacent to Idaho Falls. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to the Alzheimers Association.
