St. George, UT - Garn Tom Stanworth, dearest husband, father, grandfather and uncle, passed away quietly at the age of 85 on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 in St. George, Utah. The eldest of three, Garn was born November 5, 1925 in Hurricane, Utah to Thomas Irving Stanworth and Clara Marie (Scott) Stanworth. He, his sister Helen, and brother Scott, were raised and went to school in Hurricane, Utah.

Garn proudly and bravely served in WWII from 1943-1946, driving land and amphibious trucks on Iwo Jima in February of 1945. He continued to serve in the Active Reserves, being discharged in 1963 as a captain. He met and married his sweetheart, Helen Jeanne Morriss, soon after returning home from the war in 1947. They had five children together whom they loved and adored. Jeanne preceded Garn in death after 54 years of marriage.

Garn earned his Bachelor's (1949) & Master's (1951) Degrees with a focus in Entomology, from the University of Utah. He continued his research at the University of California and opened a business, Chemtrol Co., where he supervised all the crop fertilizing and pesticide control throughout western Riverside County. His work continued up into Blythe where he opened a soils and plant laboratory called Stanworth Crop Consultant and became one of California's leading cotton specialists.

His greatest passions in life, besides family, country and his work, included church, professional photography, and flying his planes. He held numerous callings for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, including serving in bishoprics and as bishop of the Blythe Ward. In his later years, he contributed to the family's genealogy work. After retiring to St. George, Utah in 1997, he spent his time photographing his boyhood homeland of Southern Utah. He also was a writer and photographer for the St. George Magazine and helped with the path markers on the Virgin River Trail.

In 2004, Garn married Irene (Henson) Myers in St. George. Together, they enjoyed traveling and spending time with their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Garn and Irene spent nearly eight wonderful, rewarding years together. Their love grew especially strong as together they faced his diagnosis and fight with Alzheimer's. The family would especially like to thank Cliff View Senior Living Community and Dixie Hospice nurse Pauline for the loving care they gave to Garn in his final week.

Garn is survived by his wife, Irene, his children Linda (Don) Dinkel, Robert Garn (Jonna) Stanworth, Helen Marie (Timothy) Ross, William (Gayle) Stanworth, Paul (Catharine) Stanworth, step-daughter Linda Rogers, 28 grandchildren, 56 great grandchildren, sister-in-law Patricia (Barnes) Martin, and many adoring nieces and nephews. They all loved Garn and his immense generosity and commitment to each of them throughout his life. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Jeanne, sister Helen, brother Scott, and grandson Jeffrey Paul Stanworth.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Morningside LDS Stake Center, 881 South River Road, George, Utah. Visitations will be held Friday evening, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd. and on Saturday, prior to services, from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., both at the Stake Center.
