St. George, UT - Gerta Spendlove Harvey was born December 22, 1914 in Magna, Utah. She passed away on June 12, 2012, in St. George, Utah. She was a daughter of Janus and Hazel Stonebraker Spendlove and was raised in Summit County, UT, where she graduated from Park City High School. She married Carl F. Carpenter and they had three children: Beverly, Myron and Connie. They moved to Boulder City, Nevada in 1943. They were later divorced.

On June 19, 1959, she married James M. Harvey in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. In 1972, they moved to St. George, Utah where she became the founder of the Washington County Association for Retarded Citizens and was President of the original board. She managed volunteer organizations which became the first chapter of the Utah ARC south of Provo.

As a member of the LDS Church, she served in many positions, including Relief Society President in Boulder City, Nevada and again in the Winder Seventh Ward in Salt Lake City, Utah. She served two stake missions in Boulder City, a mission in Dallas, Texas, and was a worker in the St. George Temple for many years.

She loved to crochet and embroider and during her 97 years, family and friends were the recipients of many beautiful gifts. She also made many quilts, afghans and lap throws for humanitarian aid.

Gerta is survived by children Beverly Carson and Connie Harvey of St. George, UT, Myron (Paulette) Carpenter of Eureka, UT, and step-children: Stanley (Dawn) Harvey of Provo, UT, Arbelia Bowles of Salt Lake City, UT, besides many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even great-great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly. She is also survived by brothers: John (Arlene) Spendlove of Salt Lake City, UT, and Rex (Rita) Spendlove of Millville, UT. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jim in 1980. Also preceding her in death were sisters: Donna Allred and Maxine Shattuck and step-children: Jeanine Baker and Sharon Payne.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 18, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. George LDS East Stake Center, 449 South 300 East, St. George, UT. A visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services at the Chapel. Interment will be in the St. George City Cemetery.
