St. George, UT - Gertrude DeHeer Todd our beloved Mother, Grandmother, "GG" passed away September 23, 2009 surrounded by family in St. George, Utah. She was born in Evanston, Wyoming on February 21, 1920 to Gertrude and Huibert DeHeer. She grew up in Ogden, Utah, and lived next door to her best girl friend, and her future husband, Walter Frantzen Todd. She married Walter in Pocatello, Idaho and their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple in 1964. Gertrude created beautiful homes for their family from post war Japan to Virginia, where she has lived for the last 47 years. During her life Gertrude played many roles: Her first job as a switchboard operator showed her ability to handle many things with ease. She was a supportive Air Force Officer's wife who gave the best parties in town, volunteered with the squadron, at the hospital and meals on wheels. As an active member of the LDS church she served in many areas. Some of her favorite callings were teaching the children (many generations still call her "their" friend), Temple service and compassionate service. She worked in the office of Congressman Carl D. Perkins (D-Ky) handling military cases. She was a wonderful homemaker known for her "Dutch" cleanliness and cooking. She belonged to the neighborhood bowling league and garden club. She grew beautiful African violets. She is a beloved "Lunch Bunch", "Book Club", and "Jane Austin movie" member. As the family "switchboard operator" she kept her large family informed and organized. In her later years, Gertrude was known to everyone by "Granny" and was adored by her grand- and great-grand children (each knows they are her favorite!) and the children of the Mt. Vernon Ward in Alexandria, Virginia. She was known for her chocolate chip cookies, little surprise gifts, and picnics by the Potomac River. Gertrude was also known for her many acts of quiet kindness, putting her faith in action, a great work ethic, her gift of true friendship, and her GREAT wit and humor. We love and miss her! Her husband, Walter Frantzen Todd predeceased her in 1995. Gertrude is survived by her four children, Trudy A. of Washington, D.C.; Allen D. (Tamyra) of St. George, Utah; Stuart W. (Judith) of Logan, Utah; and Michael F. (Rebecca) of Sterling, Virginia; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great-children, extended family, friends who now are family. Our thanks for all the help extended to our family, especially by the staff of Zion's Way Hospice and Bloomers Flowers and Gifts. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 2, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 W. St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah.
