IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Guy
Wetzel
December 2, 1932 – October 28, 2023
Ivins, Utah – Guy Wetzel, 90, passed over to the Saviors arms October 28, 2023, at Southern Utah Veterans Home in Ivins, Utah. He was born on December 2, 1932, in Tropic, Utah to Fred Bert Wetzel and Adelia Mirl Wilson.
He fell in love after his first date with Deloy Angel Cornelius. They were married on February 15, 1952. Their marriage was solemnized in the St. George Temple on July 10, 1952.
Deloy passed away from Cancer in 1995. He later met and married Sharon Wheeler Tremblay on April 26, 1997. He again found love after only one date. He was lucky enough to have two great women in his life.
Guy was born on the Riding homestead, and delivered by his grandmother, who was a midwife. Growing up he lived in Tropic, Marysvale, and Hurricane, Utah. His mother and father divorced when he was five years old. His mother later married Leslie Stratton.
He went to elementary and high school in Hurricane, Utah. During those years Dad missed a lot of school trying to provide for his family. His father was blind, and his mother was in poor health; his older brother had also passed away. They depended on him to bring in any financial support he could. This required him to take many seasonal jobs. He said he probably missed more school than anyone attending Hurricane High but was still able to graduate.
Shortly after his marriage to Deloy, he was drafted into the Army for two years, where he was an excellent marksman. When he returned from the Army, he became a brick mason. He was a hard worker. He could outlay many bricklayers. One day he laid 4,000 blocks. It took several "hoddies" working as fast as they could to keep up with him. He also won a contest for having "The fastest trowel", in Southern Utah.
He enjoyed the outdoors. He loved hunting and fishing and was a natural.
He had a special gift of showing love and appreciation to everyone. All his family knew they were loved by him, and all felt they were his favorite. He had nicknames for his grandchildren and great grandchildren and frequently made-up songs which included their names as he sang to them.
He spent more than 28 years working in scouting and received the Silver Beaver award for his service.
In 1975, a sweet baby boy, Jeremy Tuttle, came to live with our family. He was a foster baby who had a heart condition. He lived his short life with us. He died at one year of age and was later sealed into our family.
Dad and Sharon served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Nauvoo, Illinois; where he enjoyed using his masonry skills to repair historic church sites. Upon returning from their mission, they also enjoyed serving many years as ordinance workers in the St. George Utah Temple.
He has a posterity of 97 who are lucky enough to call him Dad, Grandpa, and Great Grandpa.
We would like to thank the special caregivers at Southern Utah Veterans home who brightened his days.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Tremblay Wetzel; five of his six children: Danton (Susan) Wetzel of St. George, Utah, Kayleen (Joe) Hadley of St. George, Utah, Raean (Jon) Banks of Enterprise, Utah, Jim Wetzel of St. George, Utah, Leslie (Dennis) Banks of Washington, Utah; many adoring grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his brother: Melvin G. (Virginia) Wetzel of LaVerkin, Utah; half-siblings: Mauna Wetzel Wilson, Fred Tull, Bert Cuff, Bill Cuff, and Becky Jo Munson; and nephews and nieces.
He is also survived by Sharon's children: Sheila (Paul) Ingersoll, Deborah (Glenn) Campbell, Kathleen (Mark) Bristol, Sandra Kelley, John (Teresa) Tremblay; and grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by wife, Deloy Cornelius; his parents: Adelia Mirl Wilson, Fred Bert Wetzel, and Leslie Stratton; his son: Jeremy Tuttle; his brother, Jim Wetzel; his granddaughter: Jennifer Hadley; and his half-sisters: Afton Crawford, Patricia Siminoe, and Jackie Black Medina.
