Helen Bowler Gardner, a longtime resident of Gunlock, Utah passed away at her home on July 20, 2014. She was the first born of Milton Albert Bowler and Blanche Holt Bowler on May 20, 1923. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers: Dean, Elwood, and Quenton Bowler; her sister, Alice Dawn Bowler; husband, Jay Gardner; an infant daughter, Sherry Ray Shelley; and two grandsons, Matthew Jay Grimes and Adam Louis Grimes. Helen is survived by her two daughters: Bonnie Lee Grimes Gabriel (Lyle) of San Diego, California and Diann Shelley Covington of Gunlock, Utah; and three grandchildren: Joshua John Grimes, San Diego, CA, Sherice Norton Phillips (Glen), Clinton, Utah, and Russell Jay Norton, Gunlock Utah. She is also survived by ten great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. Helen was raised in Veyo and Gunlock and graduated from high school in St. George, Utah. Later her family moved to Fallon, Nevada where they owned a dairy farm and ranch. While in Fallon, Helen went to work for the Churchill County Telephone Company and became chief operator. This telephone company was one of the few privately owned companies in the state of Nevada. She later moved to Salt Lake City and went to work for Blue Cross Blue Shield where she worked her way up to Director of provider relations. After 20+ years she retired from BC/BS and moved back to Gunlock where she enjoyed her time serving as president of the Gunlock water association, participating in callings for her LDS church, beautifying Gunlock with the help of Maxine Lindsay, by planting plum trees up and down the street of Gunlock, and writing novels, short stories, and poems; eventually publishing a book and several poems. She also received an appreciation award from the Gunlock Rodeo Association for her many years of service. She was a member of the St. George Writers Guild. Helen also worked for the Spectrum newspaper with a column called letters to Maize, and later became assistant editor of the Mesquite, Nevada newspaper. We would like to thank Southern Utah Home Hospice and all the wonderful neighbors and friends of Gunlock for all their loving support to our mom and grandma. Graveside services will be held Friday, July 25, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Gunlock Cemetery. A visitation will be held Friday, prior to services, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Gunlock LDS Ward.
