Obituary

Enterprise, UT - Helen Day Terry is now reunited with her beloved companion of seventy-five years. Mother passed away in her home surrounded by her family on October 16, 2010 of natural causes. She was born on July 2, 1915 in Enterprise, Utah to Henrietta Barnum Day and Henry Day. Nine years later her life was blessed with a baby brother, Henry Weldon Day. Mother had a happy childhood playing with numerous cousins and the Farnsworth children across the street. She spent a lot of time at her Grandma and Grandpa Barnum's house where travelers stopped for food and lodging. One of her earliest memories is when the General Authorities would stay over night. They traveled by railroad to Modena, then on to St. George by horse and buggy, spending one night at the "Barnum Home." She enjoyed school, friends and church activities. At the age of twelve she won the Retold Story Competition in the old St. George LDS Stake. Mother was the second "E Day Queen" after the E was built on the hill. After graduation from high school she attended BAC in Cedar City for a short time. Her mother took ill and she returned home to care for her. Mother married her longtime sweetheart, Alma Woods Terry on June 1, 1934 in the St. George LDS Temple. They began their lives together making ends meet during the "Great Depression." In recalling those years she said, "We didn't know things were so bad because everyone was in the same condition." Mother kept busy raising four children, serving in the church and community. She grew along with her children in Primary, MIA, and Relief Society. Her favorite was whatever she was involved in at the time. She especially enjoyed serving as Stake Drama Director and Ward Speech Director. Working with the youth in road shows, plays and musicals were fun and fulfilling. She was Captain of the D.U.P. for two terms and was a charter member of the Enterprise American Legion, later serving as president and secretary. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidery and sewing her children's clothing. Her entries in the county and state fairs won her many blue ribbons. When the Columbia Iron Mine closed and Dad decided to leave Enterprise and find work she was a willing partner. Her first experience in the work field was with Singer Sewing Machine in Cedar City. She went on to find employment at Dixie Memorial Hospital, manager of motels and apartments, retail at ZCMI and food preparation at the Allen Hall of the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah. Mother served her church wherever she lived. She always looked at her and Dad's time away from Enterprise as a great adventure of learning and meeting good people. In 1976, they returned home and worked at the Senior Citizen Center for 16 years. To her family Mother was a great lady. She was an example of love, helpfulness, determination, strength, faithfulness and prayer. We love and appreciate her greatly and are happy she is with our Dad now. Mother is survived by her children: Ondrea Turbeaugh, St. George, Alma Elmon (JoLene), Payson, Utah; Henry Kent Terry (Sandi), Salt Lake City, and Julie Ann Hurst, St. George, Utah; 16 grand children, 28 great grand children and 5 great, great grand children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alma Woods Terry; her parents, Henrietta Barnum and Henry Day; her brother Henry Weldon Day; a son in law, J. Ross Hurst; a grandson Clark Terry; and niece, Margaret Day Ybright. Our family would like to express our gratitude to Southern Utah Home Health Care and Hospice for their kindness, care and skills to Mother. Funeral services will be Wednesday, October 20, 20l0 at 11:00 a.m. at the Enterprise LDS Stake Center, 80 South Center Street, Enterprise, Utah. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 am at the Stake Center, prior to services. Interment will be in the Enterprise Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221.
