Obituary

St. George, UT - Herbert H. (Herb) Pitchforth passed away on November 26, 2011. He was born December 31, 1922, in St. George to John H. Pitchforth and Lucile E. Schmutz and was the only sibling to older brother, Shirl. Herb attended local schools, graduating from Dixie High in 1941. He was a star basketball player in high school and was on the first-ever Utah high school six-man championship football team, later playing on expanded teams. He was short, but very fast. This gift of speed helped in sports as well as in escape from consequences of occasional childhood acts of mischief. Herb played several musical instruments including the oboe and bass. He soon learned, however, you can't dance with the pretty girls while playing in the band and his musical aspirations came to a screeching halt. He loved moody jazz music, picnics in Zion National Park, fishing, golf (3 handicap), classy clothing, the "high life," his garden, and his mother. Herb was king of the road in his MG Midget sports cars and later in his Cadillac Coup de Ville convertibles and Lincoln Continentals. The Pitchforth lifestyle reflected a reverence and appreciation of the finer things of life. He graduated from pilot training at Williams Field, Arizona, June 1944. During WWII, Herb was an Army Air Force pilot in the Pacific Theatre, enlisting twice and being honorably discharged in 1946 and 1950. He flew several types of aircrafts, including the B-25 in six combat missions, earning a number of campaign medals and bronze stars. Herb married Blanche Bennett in 1945 and they divorced three years later. He received a Dixie College diploma in 1947 and then attended Utah State University for a year majoring in animal husbandry. He married Georgia Robinson in Elko, Nevada on June 2, 1957. They met in Craig, Colorado, where he was working hard on his uncle's ranch. Georgia was the light of his life until her death in 1999 and he has missed her terribly these last 12 years. He was absolutely devoted to her every want and need. Wanting to get married and provide for Georgia, he took a job with the Milne News Agency in New York, Toronto, San Francisco, and Chicago. Herb and Georgia returned to St. George in 1966 where he sold insurance for Lincoln National Life. He then formed Dixie Utah Realty and later sold real estate through Terracor, Bloomington Realty, and The Ridge Realty. The Pitchforths were active members of the Bloomington Country Club where they participated regularly in golf tournaments and many club activities. During the last decade, Herb returned to activity in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, being sealed to his wife, Georgia by proxy in the St. George Temple on September 9, 2000. For several years he enjoyed temple service on a regular basis. Herb is survived by his nephew, Charles Pitchforth; nieces: Sharon Pitchforth Snow (Ronald) and Peggy Pitchforth Steele (John); Georgia's nephew Matt Robinson (Joann) and goddaughters Megan and Madeline Robinson and Lisa Sanger Malkin. He is also survived by close friends Tami (Gary) Hess, Jana (Kay) Traveller and cousin/"adopted" niece Betsy (Greg) Sanger and many other extended family members. His family expresses appreciation for the staff at Beehive Homes for their loving and patient care the last few years and to Bishops James Jackson and Wayne Everett for their kindness and assistance. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 4, 2011, at 4:30 PM in the Relief Society Room, LDS Main Street Chapel, 166 South Main, St. George, Utah. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221. Please visit our website at www.metcalfmortuary.com for condolences, complete obituary and funeral listings.
