St. George, Utah - Howard D. Lowe, 90, passed away Monday, June 10, 2013 in St. George, Utah. He was born April 11, 1923 in Orem, Utah to Alexander H. Lowe and Ethyl Cassity Lowe. He was married to Ruth Reeve Lowe in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on September 4, 1951 and was married for 51 years until her death in 2002.
Howard grew up on a farm in Orem, Utah and graduated from Pleasant Grove High School in 1940. In 1945, he graduated in accounting from BYU, received a Masters Degree in 1948 and his doctorate degree in 1959 from Indiana University.
He lived in Abadan, Iran for 5 years, teaching accounting to Iranian students. He then moved his family to Kailua, Hawaii where he was a professor at the University of Hawaii for 27 years. He served in many callings in the LDS Church including Elders Quorum President, Gospel Doctrine Teacher, Bishop and High Councilman. He was an avid tennis player and traveled to every state and more than seventy countries, living at times in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Australia. He retired in 1991 and moved to St. George in 1993 with his wife, Ruth Lowe.
Howard is survived by his children: Kevin (Shauna) Lowe, St. George, Utah, Linda Weaver, St. George, Utah, Jordan (Michelle) Lowe, Chandler, Arizona, Alan (Laurel) Lowe Sandy, Utah and Mark (Betsy) Lowe , Louiseville, Kentucky; twenty-three grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 17, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sunset LDS 5 th Ward Chapel, 750 North 1000 West, St. George, Utah. Visitations will be held Sunday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd. And on Monday, prior to services, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Chapel. Interment will be at the Tonaquint Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221.
