Obituary

Hurricane, Utah – I Verdell Hinton 95, passed away peacefully at The Haven Assisted Living Facility April 22, 2022, with family by his side.

Verdell was born in a small brick house across the street from where the Red Brick Church stands today on December 29, 1926, in Hurricane, Utah. He was the ninth child of Bernard Hinton and Isabel Hilton Hinton. He resided in Hurricane, in Las Vegas, in Sacramento and Portland OR. He graduated from Hurricane High School in 1945 then attended Utah State University and received his bachelor's degree from Southern Utah University. He received his master's degree from the University of Nevada Reno. He taught sixth grade in Las Vegas and Sacramento and was beloved by his students.

Verdell married Beryl Pulsipher on November 27, 1946. Together they made their home in Las Vegas and transformed a lonely piece of desert near Sunrise Mountain into an oasis of green grass and beautiful trees. In 1963 he moved his growing family to Sacramento and resumed his teaching career until retiring in 1984. He again took some overgrown land and transformed it into a beautiful peach and apple orchard and small farm.

Verdell and Beryl loved to travel around the country visiting nearly all 50 states along with overseas trips to Egypt, the Holy Land, Europe and Central America. After Verdell retired, he and Beryl moved back to Hurricane and took an overgrown, neglected historical old home and again turned it into a beautiful garden spot. He emersed himself in local history and community affairs. Few people knew more about Washington County, especially Hurricane, than Verdell. He was continually asked to speak to local organizations and in surrounding communities or serve on committees. He was instrument starting the Hurricane Valley Historical Foundation and Museum. He served several terms as President of the local Sons of Utah Pioneers and a term on the Hurricane City Council. He was instrumental in the construction of Heritage Park, the restoration of the Bradshaw House and Museum, the Hurricane Canal Monument and a dozen other Hurricane heritage projects.

Verdell served in numerus callings in the LDS church including early morning seminary teacher, Bishop, Stake Patriarch (administering over 1000 blessings). He served a mission with his sweetheart, Beryl, to the Nauvoo, Illinois area.

Verdell is survived by all six of his children: Virginia (Lane) of Hurricane, Teresa (Alan) of Hamilton, Missouri, I Verdell Jr. (Karen) of Phoenix, Arizona, Richard (Susan) of Hoquiam, Washington, Michael (Lauri) of Madera, California and Gerald (Dawn) of Gresham, Oregon. He was immensely proud of his 185 descendants. He had 43 Grandchildren, 128 Great-Grandchildren and 8 Great-Great Grandchildren. He loved them all dearly and had the uncanny ability to make each one of his family members feel that he loved them best.

Verdell was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 years, Beryl Pulsipher Hinton; sister, Bernice; and brothers: Wayne, Dwight, Merrill, Stanley, Lawrence, Harvard and Ardene.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at the LDS Red Brick Chapel, 274 South 100 West, Hurricane, Utah. A visitation will be held Saturday, prior to services, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the church. Interment will be in the Hurricane City Cemetery, 255 East 600 North, Hurricane, Utah.
