WASHINGTON, UT - James R. "Russ" Orton, 78, passed away September 6, 2009 in Washington, Utah. He was born on September 13, 1930 to Delmar and Ethyle Orton. He married his high school sweetheart Melba Ann Wing on October 26, 1952 in Laredo, Texas. He graduated from Cyprus High School in Magna, Utah, and was a graduate of the University of Utah. He played for the only baseball team for the University of Utah to ever compete in the college world series in 1951 as a catcher; he is a veteran of the Korean war, serving with the 428th Fighter Bomber Group of the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1955. He retired from the Federal Aviation Administration and moved to Washington, Utah in 1983. He was an avid golfer, and worked at Southgate Golf Course as a "starter" for many years. He enjoyed the friendship and association of those from Redlands RV Park and especially the friendship of those who have assisted him in the most recent months. He is survived by his daughter Karen (Don) Ackley and her step-family of 4 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren; also his daughter Deborah's 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Melba, and daughter Deborah Rothey. Graveside services will be held on Friday, September 11, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Washington City Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 W. St. George Blvd, St. George, Utah. Arrangements entrusted to Metcalf Mortuary, 435-673-4221.
