Obituary

St George, Utah - Jamie Smith Ellsworth, 82, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 4, 2025, surrounded by her husband and children.  Born on November 2, 1942, in Phoenix, Arizona to Alden and Wilma Smith, she was their second child, their first having died at birth.  Jamie was born two months premature and was an unlikely survivor for that period of time.  As a result, she suffered chronic asthma for much of her life.

As a child, Jamie grew up primarily in Mesa, Arizona but spent a few years in New Mexico while her father worked for the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory after the Second World War.  During this time, she witnessed a test nuclear explosion in the deserts of Nevada.

Jamie attended school in Arizona and New Mexico, graduating from Mesa High School in 1961.  After high school, she attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where she met her husband.  She married Lynn Ellsworth on August 8, 1962, in the Mesa Arizona Temple.  After Lynn graduated from college, they moved to Eagar, Arizona.  They later lived in Phoenix, Arizona; San Jose, California; Lynchburg, Virginia; and Mesa, Arizona before settling back in Eagar, Arizona for over 30 years.  After retirement, they relocated to St. George, Utah to be closer to many of their children and grandchildren.

Jamie was an accomplished seamstress and sewed many clothing items for herself and others, including her own wedding dress.  She also sewed wedding and prom dresses for her daughters and blessing and baptism outfits for her children and grandchildren.  She often made matching outfits for her husband and children for vacations and other family outings.  She enjoyed teaching others how to sew.

During their retirement years, Jamie had the opportunity to serve three missions with her husband Lynn for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Their first mission was to the Bronx, New York, where Jamie spent many hours teaching others how to sew.  Their second mission was to Auckland, New Zealand, where she spent much of her time in the mission office.  Their last mission was to St. George, Utah where they worked primarily among young, single university students.  She was a life-long disciple of Jesus Christ and always strived to model her life after his teachings and example.

Jamie is survived by her husband of 63 years, Lynn Ellsworth; her aunt Lue Arnold (Leeds, Utah); her brother Dwight Smith (Altamont, Missouri); her sister LuAnn Payne (Mesa, Arizona); her children Luke & Liz Ellsworth (Orem, Utah), Effie & Brent Kitchen (Charleston, Utah), Esther & Lindsay Pugmire (Dammeron Valley, Utah), Amy & Bob Eakins (Cedar Hills, Utah), Paul & Melissa Ellsworth (Lehi, Utah), and Susan & Jason Green (Mesa, Arizona); 27 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Alden & Wilma Smith, her sisters Dawn Smith and Peggy Egbert, and her brother Craig Smith.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at the Main Street Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 166 South Main Street, St. George, Utah.  A viewing will be held the evening prior from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 W St. George Blvd in St. George, Utah.
