Hurricane, Utah
– Jean Mary Thake, 92, of Hurricane passed peacefully in the early morning hours of March 23, 2016. Jean was born October 20, 1923, in Newark, New Jersey, the only child of Frank H. and Mary Cotter Young.
Jean had a wonderful life and was very close to her family. She grew up in Newark, New Jersey and met the love of her life, Charles, at Blessed Sacrament School in kindergarten. They were wed in 1947 after Charles was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army. After spending their early years in Newark, Jean and Charles, and their toddler daughter "baby" Jean moved to Plainfield, New Jersey where they lived until 1970.
Jean was active in the Rosary Society of St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Plainfield, NJ. She was always a devoted mother to her children, regularly serving as room mother at her son's grammar school.
The family moved to Phoenix, Arizona from New Jersey to be closer to their then-adult daughter and new grandson, and other immediate family who had already immigrated to the region from the East Coast. Jean stayed busy in her new hometown caring for her own father, Frank, who made the move with them.
After Jean's husband retired they traveled the world, went on cruises, and just enjoyed life together. They were an inseparable team and their love for one another spilled over to everyone who met them. Family members recall them doing even the most mundane household tasks in partnership; washing and drying dishes, etc.
It was a shock to Jean's world when Charles passed in his sleep in 1999. Her family and close friends were surprised at how well she recovered, though the past few years have seen her own health declining. She had suffered with dementia and becoming blind in her late years, but never forgot who people were and was always a great conversationalist by phone to those who were unable to visit in person. She passed peacefully under the care of Hurricane Health and Rehabilitation, whom her family thanks for their compassionate care since she moved to their facility in September 2014. Jean's family would also like to send their thanks to Rosalie Holdaway, her at-home CNA, Sheila Larsen of Southern Utah Home Health, and Judy and Gene from the Saint George Catholic Church and the Saint Paul Catholic Center in Hurricane.
She is survived by her daughter and her spouse, Jean and Fred Smith; grandchildren and their spouses, Charles and Christie Jenner of Austin, TX, Christopher and Sharlene Jenner of Dallas, TX, September Smith of Hurricane, Kenneth Morris of Phoenix, AZ, and Nicole Thake of Phoenix, AZ; twenty great-grandchildren of immediate and extended family; ten great-great-grandchildren of immediate and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles E. Thake; infant son, Peter; son, Richard P. Thake; and daughter-in-law, Theresa Thake.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, March 26, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hurricane City Cemetery. A visitation will be held Saturday, prior to services, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Metcalf Hurricane Valley Mortuary, located at 140 South Main Street.
