St. George, Utah - Jed Elmo Steffensen passed away Saturday, October 20, 2012 at Dixie Regional Medical Center following injuries suffered from a fall. He was born November 6, 1926 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Elmo Marion Steffensen and Lovell Hyer Steffensen.
At a young age Jed and the family moved to Helena, Montana where his father had purchased a furniture business. During Jeds years in Junior High and Senior High School, he excelled in several sports. Upon graduation in 1945, he immediately joined the U.S. Navy. Following an honorable discharge in 1946, he enrolled at Utah State University where he earned a degree in Business Administration in 1950. In 1951, he married his college sweetheart, Joylene Hobbs, in Preston, Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized in The Church of Jesus Christ of LDS St. George Temple. Following graduation from USU, Jed began his business career with Montgomery Ward Department Stores managing stores in Idaho Falls, ID, Pocatello, ID, Salt Lake City, UT, Albuquerque, NM and Boulder, CO for 19 years. He then made a career change and joined Merrill Lynch as a financial advisor until retiring in 1994 and moving to St. George, UT.
Jed is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joylene; a daughter, Valerie Joy Baker; son, Lex Elmo Steffensen; three grandchildren: Steffenie Joy Baker Wright, Caleb Roy Baker; and Robert Wiley Baker, two great-granddaughters: Lexa Joy Wright and Clara LeaAnn Wright; brother, Dee M. Steffensen; sister, Gweneth Budge; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Lila S. Bennett.
Funeral services will be held Friday, October 26, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of LDS Green Valley Stake Center, 511 South Valley View Drive, St. George, Utah. A visitation will be held Friday, prior to services, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Stake Center. Interment will follow at Tonaquint Cemetery.
