Obituary

Washington, Utah - Jerry Wayne Sandberg, 81 years old, passed away in his home on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 surrounded by his family.  Jerry battled cancer for over a year.  He and Mary Jane are so grateful for the many people who helped him through this time.

Jerry was born in St. George, Utah to Wayne and Wanda Sandberg.  He grew up in Washington City and always loved it.  Jerry married the love of his life, Mary Jane, in the St. George Temple on August 27, 1971. Jerry and Mary Jane had 6 children, 4 daughters and 2 sons:  Holly, Mandy, Rebecca, Cody, Jeremy, and Kaysha.

Jerry loved being outdoors with his family and friends.  He would ride his horse, ride his bicycle, ride his 4-wheeler, work or "tinker" in the garden, and play softball.  Jerry lived in Washington City and never wanted to move. Jerry was devoted to his "little bride", Mary Jane, and to his kids and grandkids. Jerry loved the Lord and served in many callings in the Church throughout his life.  Jerry made it a daily practice of serving others. You could often find Jerry plowing someone's garden, moving other's furniture, coaching ball teams, and "cleaning the Bishop's toilet" (cleaning the Church building).

Jerry loved softball.  He played often and for many years.  He coached his children's teams, his grandchildren's teams, and then played on a senior softball team.  Jerry played softball in the Huntsman World Senior Games for 32 years.  His senior softball team took the Bronze Medal this last October 2022.  Jerry had to talk the doctor into letting him out of the hospital early so he could play in the most recent senior games.

Jerry loved to spend time in Pine Valley at the cabin.  He would drive all over on his 4-wheeler and often lead the way for his kids and grandkids.  Jerry loved spending time with his family and taking trips with all of them.  Jerry loved ice cream and had a knack for finding an ice cream shop wherever a trip would take him.

Jerry worked hard his whole life. He liked to farm and ranch like his father and brothers. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Denmark.  He could speak Danish and often used it to confuse his grandkids. Jerry earned his Bachelors Degree in Education from Utah State University, but was drafted into the army.  Jerry served in the Korean War as military police.  When he returned home, Jerry decided to work as a police officer for St. George.  Jerry also worked as Chief of Police for Washington City.  When he had young children, he decided police work was dangerous and moved to work for the Washington County School District.  Jerry became a bus driver much beloved by many children and worked at multiple schools in maintenance.  He used his time to help anyone and everyone.  Jerry was generous with his time, his energy, and his resources.

Jerry is survived by his wife, 6 children, their families, and the rest of Washington City.  Uncle Jerry was loved by many!
