Obituary

Hurricane, UT - Joan Claire Callister Bullough, age 89, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2022, in Hurricane, Utah. She was born on January 8, 1933, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Ralph Douglas Callister and Margaret Rager. She married Blaine Fredrick Bullough on May 29, 1953, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

Joan lived an idyllic childhood in the avenues of Salt Lake City alongside her sister, Mimi. Joan graduated from West High School in Salt Lake City, Utah at the age of 16.

Joan was swept off her feet by a greaser with a sense of adventure. Joan and Blaine's first date was a convertible ride with the top down…in the dead of winter. The two continued their adventure, having 7 children in just 12 years. They made impromptu trips to Yellowstone, Disneyland, and everywhere in-between.

Joan took pride in her home and family. Her home was immaculate, even down to a spritz of room spray to finish it off. She was a planner, a list maker, and a master organizer. She made the holidays special with her panache for decorating and entertaining. Joan loved to dress her children in matching outfits to show them off at church, parades, vacations, etc.

Joan had an aptitude and affection for babies. She was a Pediatric Nurse at LDS Hospital for many years, handling challenging cases calmly and compassionately. Joan also cared for neighbors, ward members, and her own grandchildren - saving two of their lives. Joan and two of her daughters operated a successful in-home daycare for about 15 years. They named it "Gucci Goo" as a nod to their flair for fashion.

Joan always had a sense of style. She favored bright pink lipstick, long, painted nails, and perfectly coiffed hair. Nonetheless, Joan wore the same black dress for years while she prioritized dresses (usually matching) for her five girls.

Perhaps Joan's greatest quality was her sense of humor. She made us all laugh with her candor, storytelling, and flowery language. Joan was both sweet and sassy. Tough and tender. She was confident, capable, and creative. Joan was also deeply spiritual and wasn't afraid to advocate for the underdog or speak out against injustice.

As a natural leader, Joan held many church and school leadership positions. She successfully managed being both PTA and Relief Society President at the same time - while also managing a home bustling with kids, pets, more kids, and more pets.

Deeply loved by her grandchildren, Gran/Grandma was the ultimate hype gal. She could always be counted on to have their back and tell them her favorite word.

Joan is survived by her two sons and four daughters: Debby (Kim) Haslam, Randy (Leslea) Bullough, Wendy (Gary) Burnett, Brett (Teri) Bullough, Becky Hall, and Lisa (Jesse) Fox; 27 grandchildren; and 51 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Blaine Bullough; daughter, Julie Jensen; sister, Marilyn (Mimi) Shaw; and three great-grandchildren: McKinley Lillywhite, Austin Bell, and Kailen Bell.

The family would like to thank Dixie Hospice for their compassion. And a special thank you to Debby Haslam and her family for their love and care of Joan over the past several years.

A family graveside service was held at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park in Salt Lake City.
