Joanne M. Smith St. George, UT - Joanne M. Smith, age 91, left this earth on March 2, 2011, in St. George, Utah. She was born on December 13, 1919 in Saco, Montana to Henry Albert Martin and Lucy Hazel Hunter. Weighing only two pounds at birth, no one thought she would survive, but did she fool them! Joanne lived in Saco until the age of twenty, then moved to Seattle, Washington where she met and married Glenn Earle Thomas. While she was raising six children, she attended college to become a teacher. She received her masters degree in English and journalism from Central Washington University. She taught high school for many years and loved working with teenagers. After she retired, Joanne served three missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served as a temple worker for over twenty years in seven different temples. She loved to work on family history and once went to Europe with her sisters to find family names. After Glenns death, Joanne met and married a wonderful man, James Warren Smith. They lived happily together for twenty years. Joannes favorite hobby was quilting. Each child and grandchild has a quilt that they treasure. The sewing machine was her friend and the kitchen was just a necessity! Joanne loved camping and, at age 90, she went on her last camping trip with her family. Joanne is survived by her husband, James W. Smith, children: David R. (LaWana) Thomas, Lucy A. (Dennis) Sessions, Norman R.(Lila) Thomas, Roger M. (Nicole) Thomas, Linda K. (Ken) Byington, Wendy Smith Brooks, and daughter in law, Debbie Thomas Johnson, 27 grandchildren, 58 great-grand children, 4 great-great-grandchildren (more are on the way!) and sisters: Helen VanGieson and Nancy Bright. Her first husband, Glenn, and one son, Kenneth E. Thomas, preceded her in death. Joanne had so much energy and a delightful zest for life. We will miss her!
