Obituary

St. George, UT - John Roland Barnum, 80, died at his home in St. George in the morning of October 21st. He was born in Las Vegas, Nevada on April 13, 1929 to John Dellas Barnum and Sarah Leavitt Barnum. He was raised in Mesquite, Nevada until his senior year in high school when his family moved to Overton and he graduated from Moapa Valley High School. He married Barbara Lucille Petty on September 23, 1948 in Las Vegas and they were later sealed in the ST. George Temple on January 25, 1955. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; his children: Celia Bjelland of St. George, Valerie Morris of Fullerton, CA., Clifford (Lynne) Barnum of Hurricane, Jeanette (Dennis) Allen of Eagle Mountain, and Sylvia Seschillie of Cameron, AZ; his sister, Annette (Tom) Winslow of Santa Clara. He is also survived by 27 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Pauline and Delores; his son, John Michael; and grandson, Eric Bjelland. He spent most of his working life in Southern California as a realtor and in insurance sales. He and his wife moved to St. George in 2002 and he spent the last four years as the drive-through guy at SunFirst Bank. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many callings through-out his life, including several bishoprics and as Bishop of the Otay Mesa Ward in San Diego, CA. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 26, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Morningside Stake Center, 879 S. River Road, St. George, Utah. Visitation will be held Monday from 9:00 to 10:30 at the Stake Center, prior to services. Interment will be at the Mesquite Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. (Nevada time).
